North Carolina speedway owner offers 'Bubba Rope' for sale

DANBURY, N.C. (AP) — The owner of a North Carolina racetrack advertised “Bubba Rope” for sale in a social media marketplace days after NASCAR said a noose had been found in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace, the top series’ only Black driver, at Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama

Mike Fulp, the owner of the half-mile (0.8 km) 311 Speedway in Stokes County, made the pitch Wednesday on Facebook Marketplace: “Buy your Bubba Rope today for only $9.99 each, they come with a lifetime warranty and work great.’’

Fulp’s Facebook followers criticized the ad, with some self-described loyal spectators saying they would stop attending events at the dirt track because of the post. Critical comments also appeared on the speedway's Facebook page.

The ad had been taken down by midday Thursday. No one answered the phone at the speedway Thursday and the inbox couldn't accept a message seeking comment.

Gov.'s Office condemns speedway owner's racist FB post in wake of Wallace noose incident

. . .

STOKES COUNTY — The owner of 311 Speedway here advertised “Bubba Rope” for sale on a Facebook page in the wake of controversy surrounding NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace's announcement that a noose had been found in his garage at Talladega Superspeedway.

In the ad, Mike Fulp, 55, of Lawsonville, who owns the half-mile dirt race track near the Rockingham County line, listed “Bubba Rope’’ for sale with a pitch: “Buy your Bubba Rope today for only $9.99 each, they come with a lifetime warranty and work great.’’

Wallace, NASCAR's only full-time Black driver, learned this week through an FBI investigation that a door pull fashioned as a noose had been in place at the Alabama raceway since at least October.

. . .

Indeed, Fulp's post inflamed plenty of people who follow him on Facebook. Several who described themselves as loyal spectators wrote to Fulp that they would stop attending 311 events because of the post. Other people shared screen shots of nearly a dozen of Fulp's older Facebook posts, since deleted.

In one he writes: "We've really been bad people. I think we should give them a bucket of Kentucky Fried chicken, 2 watermelons and a plane ride back to Africa.''

NC governor, activists condemn speedway owner who posted ‘Bubba Rope’ for sale
Though Mike Fulp has now deleted the post, he has a history of using his business to promote his particular 'Christian' ideals

By Biba Adams -June 26, 2020

. . .

Fulp once tried to run for the Stokes County Board of Commissioners as a Republican, however, he lost that race. Yet, he continued his campaign of hatred online and at his racetrack. After NASCAR banned Confederate flags from their tracks, Fulp asked his customers to bring and display their flags at his raceway. He called the event, “Heritage Night.”

“We believe it’s our right to protect the sport we love. Purchase your Confederate flags and caps here, along with your Christian flag, American flag, Donald Trump flag and caps,” he wrote on Facebook.

I was able to post a Yelp review before it looks like Yelp blocked the page temporarily.

Speedway loses partnerships after ‘Bubba rope’ post

PINE HALL, N.C. (AP) — A North Carolina racetrack has lost some partnerships after its owner advertised “Bubba Rope” for sale online days after NASCAR said a noose had been found in the garage stall of Bubba Wallace, the top series’ only Black driver.

A concrete company and a driver series ended their partnerships Friday with the half-mile, dirt track 311 Speedway in Stokes County, the Winston-Salem Journal reported.

The racetrack owner’s “Bubba Rope” post on Facebook Marketplace earlier this week sparked a backlash on social media and a condemnation from a spokesman for Gov. Roy Cooper.

“Buy your Bubba Rope today for only $9.99 each, they come with a lifetime warranty and work great,” the post said.

The Carolina Sprint Tour posted on its Facebook page that it would not race at the speedway for the remainder of its season, according to the newspaper.
