Trump increasingly turning to executive orders, more to come

By KEVIN FREKING

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is setting a brisk pace lately in issuing executive orders and he’s just getting started as he tries to position himself as a man of action on everything from foreign policy to racial justice in an election year. The impact of some of the orders, though, is less than meets the eye.

Trump has so far issued 33 executive orders this year, though he was a critic of such actions when running for office. He’s on pace to exceed his high of 55 executive orders issued during his first year in office.

Mark Meadows, Trump’s chief of staff, says the president is considering more orders in coming days dealing with topics such as immigration, jobs and China. He contrasted Trump’s efforts with members of Congress who are returning to their home states and districts for much of July. They’re expected to come back for a short while before heading out again for most of August.

“It’s apparent that they are not willing to stay here to get the people’s work done. In fact, they’re disappearing for almost three weeks,” Meadows said. “I don’t know that in this particular environment that you can just stand by and say we can just take a three-week vacation.”

... when the Trump admin criticizes Congress for their recesses. Some folks are jerks and never go home (Pat Roberts), but most do. That’s part of their job. Yes, I’m sure there is some time off but those recesses are designed for them to be in their home. And with Covid, staying home is probably best for some of those old Congress critters.

Trump spent pretty much the entire Obama administration complaining about what Trump believed was overuse of executive orders and excessive golfing. Now that he himself is president, he signs EOs and golfs at a higher rate than Obama ever did.

8. Calling All Anti-Executive Order Republicans

During President Obama's time in office many Republican constantly complained about President Obama signing executive orders. Republicans constantly claimed that executive orders were unconstitutional. Now that Donald Trump is in office I do not hear Republicans complaining about executive orders being unconstitutional. Now you have Republicans like Mark Meadows claiming Donald Trump should issue executive orders because Congress in going on a three week recess, which Meadows now calls a vacation. Well, members of Congress went on recesses/"vacations" when President Obama was in office. I do not recall the likes of Meadows claiming President Obama should issue executive orders because members of Congress were going on three with recesses/"vacations".

Executive orders is another issue, like golfing, going on vacation, government spending, and dealing with national and international issues that Republicans have changed their point of view on now that one of their own is in office. Now that Donald Trump is in office executive orders are just fine and should be issued if it can be argued that Congress is not working with the executive branch. However, a few short years ago executive orders were horrible work arounds of Congress. It did not matter if it could be argued that Congress was not working with the executive branch.

More reporters should force Republicans to answer why executive orders were such a bad thing during President Obama's time in office, but now they are okay since Donald Trump is in office. If they try to claim that Donald Trump is not going as far as President Obama went they should be forced to explain how what Trump is doing is different from what President Obama did when he was in office.
