John Bolton and Mary Trump Seem to Agree On One Thing: Donald Trump Is a Truly Awful Person
Over the last few weeks two very different books have told the story of an unstable president unable to govern and unfit to lead. One book was written by Mary Trump, the presidents niece, the other was written by John Bolton, Trump's former National Security Adviser.
The two differ in many ways. Mary Trump has a Ph.D. in psychology and once spent six months at a Long Island hospital studying patients with schizophrenia. John Bolton is a terrifying warmonger who loves to blow things up. Boltons book, The Room Where It Happened (for which he received a reported $2 million book advance), is a torpid 577 pages and reads like poorly translated stereo instructions, (Bolton has a gift for bleeding the color and excitement out of every single event he chronicles.) Mary Trumps book, Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the Worlds Most Dangerous Man, is a much more readable 225 pages, a delicious tell-all that does in fact tell all in a way one longs for a tell all to do. I detested Boltons book from the moment I opened his behemoth but then I also detest Bolton.
Stylistically, Bolton book is filled with throat clearing and excuse making, the kind we will inevitably see from Republicans senators trying to curry favor when Trump is gone. Marys book is filled with abject horror at the monster her own family created. (As The New York Times review of Too Much and Never Enough pointed out, Mary Trump believes "her uncle has the emotional maturity of a 3-year-old," one who, when he was younger, was "ingratiating to his father, disobedient to his mother and bullying to his younger brother, stealing little Robs favorite toy trucks and goading him into kicking a hole in the bathroom door."
But despite their differences in style and temperament, both authors deliver an eerily parallel portrait of an unstable, self-absorbed man one whose traits has proven surprisingly consistent from childhood to his 70s, including the fact that he just doesn't read and seems almost to take pride in his ignorance.
