How quickly will there be a vaccine? And what if people refuse to get it?
Experts are hopeful a coronavirus vaccine could be released early next year but that doesnt mean things will return to normal
(Guardian UK) Scientists around the world are racing to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus and many believe at least one could be released early next year. According to the World Health Organization, about 23 vaccines are in clinical evaluation, and more than 130 are in development.
Biotech firm Moderna and the National Institutes of Health said their vaccine provoked a desired immune response in 45 individuals; it will move on to larger-scale testing at the end of the month. The University of Oxford, which has paired with drugmaker AstraZeneca to create another vaccine, said it was anticipating positive news on early trials of its drug.
The mumps vaccine, widely considered the fastest ever developed, took four years. Experts explain what goes into developing a vaccine and what comes next.
How optimistic are you that well have a vaccine in early 2021?
Angela Rasmussen: Im optimistic. Its not necessarily going to be the perfect vaccine. We might find early evidence that some of these vaccines are at least partially effective, and thats enough for now because the need is so great.
Anna Durbin: I think were going to (understand) the efficacy for one, or maybe two candidates by the end of 2020 to the beginning of 2021 at the pace things are going. Im more concerned with the ability to produce enough for everybody who needs it. ..........(more)

(11,561 posts)The CDC researcher has said theyre not sure there will ever be a vaccine because the virus keeps rapidly evolving. He has further said the best things we can do at this point are wear masks, wash our hands and do social distancing. Lives have been sacrificed on the Republican political altar of government is the problem. Every single one of them must be voted out of office in every single election. They are deadly by design.

I feel like this is a big kickoff to climate change - over population. I mean, what is social distancing anyway but don't be among crowds, i.e., planet is too crowded.
I think it's going to be a die-off (which I've long predicted. It's happening with other species. Why would humans be exempt?) It will come down to herd immunityand who survives by health or by chance.

(11,561 posts)Thanks to rigid Republican political ideology we are so much further behind than we could have been.
Discussing with my spouse - we are 65 - I expect we will live out our lives under some degree of pandemic.
Due to our white privilege, we are able to avoid many of the risk factors. One of the 3 of us in my nuclear family I assume will get it. Hope it's me and not him, or our 27 year old daughter. I can't stand to see sufferring anywhere.
I've lived a good life and done most of what I've wanted and aspired to. I have been fortunate and received many gifts. There are still things on my bucket list, but I've not left anything big undone. I've expressed love to my beloveds; made a difference to people in need of my help; worked hard for social justice; achieved personal and professional success as I define it; and had a lot of laughs along the way. Don't feel like I've left anything on the table.
Can't ask for much more.

(25,183 posts)First, healthcare workers need it more than I do. And after that, first responders, grocery clerks, and other essential workers need it more than me, too.
I have the luxury of being retired, and only having to go to the grocery store about once a week. If I take a couple of months or so to get around to receiving a vaccine, by that time we should have a better idea of which ones are more effective, which ones have more side effects, etc. In my situation, there's no sense in crowding into a doctor's office to get a vaccine that might only give two months worth of immunity, when I can stay immune by completely keeping away from other people.
Any vaccine rushed to the finish line by Trump just for the purpose of helping his re-election efforts should be considered suspect.
