'Ted Cruz Spews Disgust At 'Waiters & Waitresses,' Who Don't Deserve $600 Unemployment Checks

'Ted Cruz spews disgust at ‘waiters and waitresses’ who he says don’t deserve $600 unemployment checks.'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday blasted waiters, waitresses and bus boys who he said don’t deserve an additional $600 per week for being unemployed during the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview on CBS, Cruz told host Margaret Brennan that restaurant owners are at a disadvantage because their staff doesn’t want to work while the pandemic is ongoing.

“We need to do significantly more to fight the disease,” Cruz opined. “At the same time, we have an absolute economic catastrophe. We have over 44 million Americans [who] have lost their job and we have got to get America back to work.”

According to Cruz, Democrats like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA) are “shoveling cash at the problem.”...

He ought to stay out of restaurants. It would be a shame if an infected person left him a little present.

This means making it more lucrative to stay home rather than go back to work.

I realize that GOPers think "essential workers" should be low wage AND exposed constantly to a deadly illness.

But we need first to break this pandemic. Then Cruz can go back to making low-paid workers more miserable as he usually does, until of course we get President Biden and a higher minimum wage.

He's going to have to stay out of restaurants, even coffee shops, for the rest of his life.

Repubs said that state records and computers could not accurately determine full wage so a benefit based on the individuals last job wage would not be practical. So instead a calculation determined that the dollar amount needed to keep income at the same level, on average, was $600. They wanted to keep personal income at the per pandemic level to keep the economy from collapsing. So Dems dropped their individualized benefit and just said $600 for everyone. Now Repubs want an individualized benefit tailored for last wage of the unemployed individual, tho they want only 70%. And now Dems say, huh? You persuaded us the states could not make an accurate calculation for that. Now Repubs say the states can do it pretty quickly. Dem say it will take up to two months to reprogram state computers and even then there will probably be bugs and errors.

But the spread of the virus rages on, killing Americans and crippling the economy. That is not the fault of restaurant staff. It is the fault of Ted Cruz who has shown zero leadership and zero compassion for fellow humans.

I read this in a column in the Wash post, forget the author. If no one will return to work Cruz has a legitimate point. But the evidence suggests it’s not true. If workers refused work then wages would be rising. But they aren’t rising. So it’s not true. Second a very large number have returned to work, in most cases getting less pay than they would get staying home. Workers want to go back to work and will go back. They apparently understand the extra $600 is only temporary so they better hook up with their old job while it’s still around. So the number of employers not being able to be rehired is a lot smaller than Cuz suggests. And if the $600 is snatched away consumer spending will collapse, causing way more jobs to evaporate than are currently being unfilled because of a small number turning down job offers. The small number returning to work in restaurants will have no customers, because without the $600 there isn’t enough money to go eat out. And millions of other workers will be laid off when that $600 goes away. Cruz hasn’t considered the big picture.
