Megan Markle speaks out on "..Racial upheaval" & 'Welcome to The 19th'
'The 19th' is symbolic in celebrating the 100 yr anniversary of the 19th ammendment that gave Women the Right to Vote.
This interview with Meghan Markle is quite an inspiring read.

The Duchess of Sussex, 39, joined a virtual summit on Friday for a conversation with Emily Ramshaw, the cofounder and CEO of The 19th*, a "nonprofit, nonpartisan newsroom reporting at the intersection of gender, politics and policy" with Meghan serving as moderator and asking the questions.
"To come back and to just see this state of affairs, I think at the onset, if I'm being honest, it was just devastating. It was so sad to see where our country was in that moment," she said.
"If there's any silver lining in that, I would say that in the weeks after the murder of George Floyd, in the peaceful protests that you were seeing, in the voices that were coming out, in the way that people were actually owning their role
it shifted from sadness to a feeling of absolute inspiration, because I can see that the tide is turning."
"...certainly for people to remember just how hard it was to get the right to vote. And to be really aware and not taking that for granted," she said. "My husband for example he's never been able to vote."

She and fellow Northwestern alumna Ramshaw discussed the 19th*'s beginnings, with the Duchess of Sussex congratulating her on the journalistic endeavor.
"You're capturing this moment in such an extraordinary way...You did it," she said.

Ramshaw shared on Twitter, "In the department of the surreal: The Duchess reached out to us; she said [the 19th's] vision of building a diverse and representative newsroom that covers women and other underserved people with nuance + empathy spoke to her immediately."
Ramshaw continued, "She asked if she could interview me on 'storytelling that lifts up those who are too often underrepresented in the media,' and 'what it means to build a media outlet with gender equity, diversity and community at its core.' "
Meghan's appearance closed out the five-day event which included other notable speakers such as Hillary Clinton, Kamala Harris, Melinda Gates and Meryl Streep.

"She's just white-splaining to me.
Sorry, that sounded rude. No offense.
I just think she's lived as a white woman her whole life and, as another white woman, I'd rather get the story from black women."

It is offensive.

Please consider deleting your comment that's whitesplaining blackness to black people and PoC here. To me, your comment rivals if not surpasses many of your conservative brethren's attacks of Sen. Harris.

(2,396 posts)Yes, I know that her mother Doria is a black woman, her father Thomas is a white man, who she was mainly raised by after their divorce.
I've been following her journey ever since she came on the scene since I was an avid Royal watcher. I liked her and was very excited that she was marrying Harry.
But my opinion is, which I guess is highly offensive, is that she hasn't embraced her black heritage until it's convenient. I think she's always dated white guys, white friends, white husband and so forth.
I think now she's lecturing me in a woke word salad, coming from a woman with enormous white privilege
I'm sorry my opinion is making you guys so upset but I'm entitled to it if you're going to bring her up here.
I'm not going to spend all day arguing about Meghan Markle.

"I guess"..?
How do your know what racial struggles Markle has encountered in her life as a Black woman?
Btw, the reason they fled UK was because of all the sickening bigotry directed at her by the media.
In following the Royals, you would have come to know that. It was relentless.
I hope they find peace & happiness & raise their family to be open minded.
This article she speaks of the 19th amendment, and refers to the sad state of affairs that followed the murder of George Floyd.
She speaks genuinely to the brave protesters who gathered across America & the world to protest such blatant racism.
I applaud an intelligent, successful BLACK WOMAN of her position or means or celebrity for joining with others in speaking of the struggles, both racially & the right to vote.
Which is what this article was about.
The article is a genuine glimpse into Ms Markle's own personal connection to both these mega issues.
Her husband having never been able to Vote, & the racial upheaval of our time.
Here, if you read nothing more at the OP article link, please read just this.
Markle's very current perspective as to how it is from a Black woman of means. And she is dead right.
"To come back and to just see this state of affairs, I think at the onset, if I'm being honest, it was just devastating. It was so sad to see where our country was in that moment," she said.

She states the reality of the subject intended in the article.
I applaud her involvement and her voice.
Meghan Markle now moves into the long list of Women of Color & Purpose who do what they can to move the needle forward on race, gender & equality.
Considering the bs she endured by the UK bigoted Press & yet having to adhere to protocol by smiling & waving thru it all, the perseverance she again shows in stepping into the spotlight to lend her voice against such judgemental inequality, qualifies her to stand up & join the generations of voices against such injustice.
You may continue to judge her as you wish.
That's your right.

"I think she's always dated white guys..." (but you don't know for a fact)
"I think now she's lecturing me..." (no, she gave an interview which you read)
"I'm sorry my opinion is making you ... upset... but I'm entitled"
No one can tell anyone who is and is not "black enough." Being affluent does not erase anyone's blackness. This nation still believes in the one drop fallacy, and it shows. Polite, well dressed, wealthy racism is still racism.
It's *exactly* what the right is trying to do with Kamala Harris--not "genuine" enough, not one of "us."
sigh...

(13,036 posts)and elsewhere. She is of mixed race, like Barack Obama & Kamala Harris. Does that make any of them any less black? Of course not. Let's not denegrate a lovely woman who is full of integrity and tremendous feminine strength. It is neither kind nor helpful when we put another woman down like that, especially a liberal one.

From their mission statement to their staff, Markle fits well with this purposeful org.
She understands & accepts The 19th because she has lived it.
She has spoken on the world stage on human rights, thru her travels as UK ambassador & as a US citizen thru her celebrity.

(15,325 posts)Meghan Markle has:
.. Been bestowed the title of Global Ambassador for World Vision, advocate for UN Women, and counsellor for One Young World, a U.K.-based charity.Dec 1, 2017
*Gender equality campaigner
Like Emma Watson, Markle is a UN womens advocate (for Political Participation and Leadership) and has publicly supported Watsons He For She campaign.
In 2015, she narrated a public service announcement for the organisation and has given a speech before the UN secretary general Ban Ki Moon. As she says in a blog post: Ive never wanted to be a lady who lunches Ive always wanted to be a woman who works.
Her feminism dates back to childhood, according to Markle, and she has spoken of writing to womens rights lawyer Gloria Allred and the then First Lady Hillary Clinton to protest against the tagline for a dish washing liquid company that said: Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans. Allred and Clinton apparently pledged support and months later the advert was changed to: People all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.
*Humanitarian
Markle is an an ambassador for Canadas World Vision Clean Water campaign and as part of that role, she has travelled to Rwanda. Last month, she was seen talking to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the One Young World Summit in Ottawa a celebration of young leaders from across the world.
She has also visited the Gihembe refugee camp in Rwanda to meet with women leaders in the camp as part of her gender equality campaign work.
In a recent column for Elle, the actress explained how her two worlds of red-carpets and TV shows can be successfully combined with her humanitarian work.
*Racial equality campaigner
Two years ago, Markle wrote a column for Elle about establishing her identity as a mixed-race woman. As the daughter of an African-American mother and caucasian father, she wrote about her confusion at not knowing which box to tick on a form asking her ethnicity at school as the options were limited to white, black, hispanic or Asian.
In her early acting days, she says she often missed out on roles as she wasnt black enough for the black roles and wasnt white enough for the white ones, leaving me somewhere in the middle as the ethnic chameleon who couldnt book a job. 2017
Markle said she witnessed the 2014 Ferguson and Baltimore protests in horror as both sides of a culture I define as my own became victims of spin in the media, perpetuating stereotypes and reminding us that the States has perhaps only placed bandages over the problems that have never healed at the root.
*Entrepeneur
Markle founded the lifestyle blog The Tig which she describes as a digital conversation between girlfriends. The blog contains fashion, beauty and wellness content, however, she says she also started it as a place to publish inspiring pieces for young women.
I knew that girls were checking the site to see fashion tips or how to get a stellar blow dry, but in reframing the beauty content to include think pieces about self-empowerment, or feature dynamic women such as Fatima Bhutto, I was hoping to integrate social consciousness and subjects of higher value than, lets say
selfies. A subtle means to pepper in what really matters, she writes on the website.
-------------
And that is just a start...
Meghan Markle is educated, has an enormous amount of life experience, a wealth of walking-the-walk opportunities to lend to her creds as she advocates for human rights across the board.
She doesn't need photo ops & camera shots to identify her true image of compassion & humanitarianism.
Meghan Markle has built her own credibility in advocacy.
To read her history, already long in chapters at the age of 39, (born Aug 4th, 1981), it is clear that Meghan Markle is well fitted as one of the 100 + women advocates to be honored.-------
If you don't know of Markle's true self, then it's probably time to lay aside the tabloids & simply find out for yourself. There's a lot to know.
