I think we are really screwed....
With RBG dying this week, it has put a hole in my heart for this country. Even before she is in the ground, Republicans are already talking about replacing her . They show no respect for her life and her death. They only are eager to replace her so they can finally put a nail in abortion rights. Which will drive women to back alleys again and causing more of them to die, but they don't care about that.
Trump promised that he would permanently stop collecting tax that supports SSI and Medicare. It has been reported that if he does, by 2023, it will be unable to pay out any benefits to retirees and Medicare would cease to exist. (I am one of those currently collecting both) What are we suppose to do? Most people that are on SSI and Medicare can not work due to their age or physical attributes. My wife has a brain tumor (3rd time) and she can't work. I take care of her 24/7, so I can't hold a full time job at 65 and who would hire someone that age?. I know I am not the only one in this boat. How are people going to be able to stay in nursing homes when Medicare is gone? Our kids are not set up to take care of the elderly, because they barely are able to take care of themselves. Millions of Americans paid into SSI and Medicare, yet, these Republicans think nothing to destroying the programs, while putting us all into poverty and throwing us out into the streets.
Oh, and thinking about living on the streets, that will become illegal as some city's are now making homelessness a crime.
The upcoming election, shows some promise, but as we all know, it wont be a honest one because cheating is now the new norm and cheered on by one party.
I feel that we have gone over the cliff, awaiting to reach the bottom, but it never comes.
Our country has gone through some bad times, but never this bad and I am afraid there is no stopping any of this, no matter how hard we try!

(2,831 posts)I'm fascinated by American English dialects, and yours is unfamiliar to me.
For instance, it's rare for the native English speaker to leave out articles, as in "Trump promised that he would permanently stop collecting tax..." It's surpassing rare for a native speaker, not matter how thick the dialect, to say anything other than "collecting the tax."
And here's an idiomatic issue: "They only are eager to replace her so they can finally put a nail in abortion rights." I realize that idioms have some variation from region to region, but what you put a nail in, in English, is a coffin. So you would say, "they can put another nail in the coffin of abortion rights." But "put a nail in abortion rights" actually makes no sense in English. Literally speaking, putting a nail in something is building it. And there's no figurative usage that I know of (other than nail in coffin) where you put a nail in something to kill it.
And prepositions are the bane of anyone learning a second (or more) language, aren't they? I'm not thinking of any regional dialect that would say, "these Republicans think nothing to destroying the programs..." I just can't think of a regional dialect where a person wouldn't say, "think nothing of..." Because using "to" with a gerund simply isn't done.
So anyway, back to my initial question: Where'd you grow up. I'm dying to know what tiny subregional dialect of American English contains these quirks (and the others in your post I haven't taken the time to detail).
So look I forward to your replying.

I am not in the doom and gloom camp, but forum posts don't normally get a particularly rigorous examination. It's more like personal conversation.
Is the intent of the critique to try to determine if the OP is really an American citizen?

(1,306 posts)I feel exhausted by having to endure the attacks on the spirit and on
human decency perpetrated by the GOP on a daily basis.
Combating evil, lying, corrupt, shameless, soulless, immoral bullies
tends to weigh on a person after a while. It will try the faith of the
staunchest fighter.
I also feel disgusted and enraged, and I fully expected this because the GOP
simply has no conscience as a whole. We only need 3 GOP Senators to
squash all this nonsense. Can we find 3 who actually have a conscience?
Remember the Kavanaugh hearings? As Don Lemmon said on CNN, the
hypocrisy of the GOP is "stunning".
This is why a 60% majority vote should be the standard for SCOTUS
nominees. It forces the nominating party to persuade at least a few people
from the opposing party to vote in support of the nominee -- otherwise, no
deal.

(1,568 posts)... and powerless. The worst continues to happen this year (including my health declining and my daughters rape) and I dont expect anything positive to come in November. Theyve had four years to perfect their cheating and I feel it will be a win for Trump.
A lot of us feel this way. Its not just me. You guys piling on anyone who expresses their fears is not helpful. People have to vent. Have to process. Thats what we all thought DU was for...maybe not?
You say its not helpful to post doom and gloom but when thats all you see or feel, being attacked for expressing it or your fears instead of feeling supported will only drive people away. If you drive people off DU - especially new ones - you might even lose a small percentage of those to the party. They might vote third party or feel their feelings dont matter and skip voting Blue - because of the beatdown they got right here.
Dont act like Republican assholes who require loyalty and people to toe the party line with no discussion. Let folks express their concerns and fears.
Were Democrats. Act like one.

(28,817 posts)Not all of us. you express your powerlessness we get to express that we are not interested in hearing it.
DU is moving forward with Joe. We are not wringing our hands and stuck in the negative feelings. Positivity is always a better rallying point.
Sorry about your family problems. Each and everyone one of us have had tragedy over the past year. Cancer deaths, covid deaths, health care still continue for all of us .

(28,817 posts)Threatening to take your vote elsewhere is definitely not going to work here.
You think your doom is now, your vote elsewhere is really not in your best interest. If you joined DU it was to support Democrats. If you arent going to do that because of your feelings good or bad then get off DU.
Its a discussion board to many of us. Not a bitch session.

(1,568 posts)I asked that we stop collectively attacking people because we could run them off? Then you attack me and accuse me of some kind of threat?
Thats EXACTLY what I was talking about. If I wasnt a lifelong Dem, if I was someone looking for reassurance, if I was independent and not certain - you would have literally chased me to a third party or to feel like the Democrats dont care about me.
Geez, people.
But live in your bubble where everyone has to be positive. Not all of us can live there. Im working my ass off in red Kansas to GOTV but that doesnt change the fact that I feel this election will be stolen and the SCOTUS will uphold it.
LakeArenal
(28,817 posts)You cant be pushed away. His is a discussion board. If you think Im attacking you, alert on me.
You accuse someone,Im not sure who, of living in a bubble.
Being confident is not living in a bubble. But you seem unhappy that doom and gloom isnt spreading.
So cheer up. Your feelings matter. Dont lose hope. Spread joy not fear. Have faith.
Buck up. Visualize success. Dont wallow.
Be positive. Attitude is everything.
Bye now.

(53,032 posts)He said treating people badly can have that potential effect. I see no reason for the attacks on the OP. He is frightened. I've been frightened myself lately, panicked actually. I can't sleep at night. That doesn't make me a troll and the OP's fears don't make him one.

(12,470 posts)Expressing fears has to be allowed. We can't afford to pretend we are not upset by what trump wants and does along with the whole psychopath party that follows him like sheep.
If we get superstitious about expressing fear it will be harmful to people.
I am not a positive person all the time. Seems some DUers forget that in the rush to appear positive.

(1,789 posts)It is complicated and difficult, but not over. We are playing chess and they are playing knock the board over. The good news is that it is two against one. Many will vote for the Democrat because he is a Democrat and gives the hope that something progressive will come to pass. We are joined by those who simply want the system that has served us well to be preserved. Where the intelligence agencies and diplomatic corps are apolitical and not infiltrated by the president's loyalists. Where rules and laws are applied consistently without regard to which party it helps or hurts. Where the checks and balances are not just speed bumps to the president's selfish ambitions. Bad things may still happen if we fight, they will happen if we do not.

(3,334 posts)Overpopulation and pollution are the major problems and until major changes are put into place world wide, in 50 years, who is elected president in this election, won't matter. Yes, I want Biden to win because I am 72 years old and he will make my life better than trump will.
