A hangman's noose displayed in a polling station in Missouri covered up following complaints of vote

https://www.businessinsider.com/noose-in-missouri-polling-station-covered-up-following-complaints-2020-11

A replica of a hangman's noose on display in a Missouri polling station has been covered following complaints of voter intimidation towards Black voters.

The noose was on display in a glass cabinet between in the hallway of the Stone County Courthouse building in Galena, AP reported.

Stone County Clerk Cindy Elmore told The Kansas City Star that the display is a historical exhibit marked the last legal execution by hanging in Missouri, outside the Stone County Courthouse in 1937. It was several years old.

The Missouri Democratic Party's released a statement yesterday in which Acting Chair, Clem Smith, said: "This symbol's purpose is to stoke the fires of racial prejudice and strike fear in the hearts of people of color. It is a painful reminder of the murders and lynching of Black Americans.

"To see one next to a voting booth is offensive, inappropriate, and outrageous. It should be obvious to anybody that a noose does not belong at anybody's election booth. It must be taken down immediately."

This is bullshit. First, Roscoe Jackson was white. And he was hanged for murdering a salesman... TreasonousBastard Nov 2020 #1

That would be the easy way out. But, how big is the list of things not to show going to get? It... TreasonousBastard Nov 2020 #4

for 18 bucks and a car. A thoroughly bad man, he confessed to three other murders and was in jail for a large part of his life for smaller stuff. The display was historical, and made a point of being the last public hanging in the state.

His hanging was a large party back then, as were many hangings around that time. Apparently not much else to do for entertainment at the time, but eventually everyone put a stop to public executions.

BTW, Rainey Bethea was hanged for rape and murder in Owensboro, KY in 1936, and he was black and probably innocent and railroaded. He is often cited as the last public hanging in the country, but his "party" was definitely bigger, and caused outrage around the country. They were still hanging people after him, but not downtown any more.

Nobody will say that AAs in America aren't shook up at reminders of lynchings, and asking for the noose to be hidden is fine. But, it would be nice if everyone did a better job at outrage aiming.

would stifle a lot of expression and hide an ugly part of history.

This was effectively a museum display-- how many disturbing museum displays should we censor?

That is, how long have voting stations been set up in the area right next to the noose? Has this always been an area used for voting or is this a new set up?

Dont display offensive scenery. A simple black cloth over the display would of been adequate or move the voting booths into another room. To me... just damn eerie to have a death device in sight.
