Dim star: Brownsville bobbles a civics lesson on the Pledge!

"If there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein."

But for the Brownsville Area School District in Fayette County, that fixed star was obscured by clouds -- perhaps of forgetfulness, maybe of ignorance. Whatever the reason, when an eighth-grade girl refused to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, she brought unwarranted trouble on herself.
