Biden reaches out. The GOP slaps him in the face.

Opinion by E.J. Dionne Jr.

President-elect Joe Biden’s victory offered the cheerful prospect that we might begin to detoxify our politics. Maybe we could forget Donald Trump for a while and argue with at least a touch of civility about the actual problems our country faces.

Heck, some of us dared to imagine that we might treat each other with respect. After all, Biden said over and over that he wanted to be the president of all Americans and honored the dignity of voters who had supported Trump in the past by expressing an understanding of their discontents.

Moreover, bypassing more polarizing alternatives, Biden’s own party chose the candidate most likely to be acceptable to the other side, itself a form of outreach.

And the GOP’s response to the outreach? With just a handful of exceptions, abject refusal to stand up against the anti-democratic lunacy of Trump’s efforts to nullify the results of a fair election.

obstruct and interfered with Georgia?

No, "we" were under no illusion and actually listen to the Republicans when they say fuck us, cut their heads off, let them die.

Lesson learned by Obama: reach across the aisle and they give you a chainsaw to shake. Pretty sure Joe is well aware of this. Give lip service to “bipartisanship” for a few weeks and then f* them, executive orders on the way.

But Biden was part of Obama's "move forward not backwards" decision.
And he's already hinted at not wanting to prosecute anything.

Sucks because, if a Biden admin does forgive and forget, I don't know who the Democrats are trying to please here, or how being tepid on fighting for justice and accountability is bad for them.

1. Republican voters would think Democrats are evil, chld molesting, communist, canibals who are holding power illegitimately no matter if we were aggressively pursuing justice on them or not.

2. Democratic voters overwhelmingly demand it. And many will be disappointed. Many will judge Biden's decisions on letting the criminals go, if that's what he does, in 2022, and 2024.

Its a lose / lose if they don't allow the AG to prosecute Trump admin crimes. And yes, Biden, Pelosi, and others WILL have a say in that decision. Based on recent history, I just don't think Democratic leadership understands how crucial it is to reach the truth, and to punish criminals. And they put way too much faith in Republicans promises of bi-partisanship and the need to "heal", even if that bandaid is only offered one way from us to them. I wish they'd listen to AOC and other progressives that know how to respond to Republican treachery.

Democrats always compromise, never put up a fight, always accept the loss. We're scared of our own shadows, not real he-men, but Seattle latte-drinking libruls. Didn't you know? We're the Washington Generals, always expected to lose.

I have a feeling that the Trumpsters have been so indoctrinated by now about how those libruls are supposed to act, that the idea that we're done giving f*cks probably can't even register in their brains. I don't think anyone, from Biden on down, expects the GOP to truly compromise. We will give the olive (fig) leave to that expectation for a few weeks at best but at this point, I fully expect that the only way to get anything done is to beat the Republicans into submission.

Reach out and when not accepted, take the gloves off. They don’t want bipartisan government.. they want their way or no way..one way or the other

If they do not prosecute this bunch and try to come out with a "forgive and forget" I will withdraw from politics completely... If this country does not stand up and declare in every way that no one is above the law except some are given passes then the hell with it. I am too old to move out but can just go on and ignore politics and not advocate or donate to or for anyone again... tired of the double standard that allows some privileged part of society to get away with murder and others going to prison for minor offenses
