Op-Ed: Why so many people want to believe the election was stolen

A month after the presidential election, President Trumpís claim that the election was rigged to benefit Joe Biden has been debunked by numerous Republican state elections officials. Dozens of lawsuits filed by the Trump campaign and its proxies have been rejected by judges in both state and federal courts. There is no evidence to support any of the campaignís baseless charges of election fraud, though its power to undermine faith in American democracy is real.

Yet millions of Americans ó including about 70% to 80% of Republicans ó believe the election was stolen. Why?

One standard answer is that Trumpís backers will believe anything he says. Another perspective, popular among some psychologists, is that people filter ambiguous information through an ideological lens, preferring interpretations that favor their political affiliations.

But in this case, these explanations seem insufficient. People follow charismatic leaders and selectively process political information, but they do not typically cling to a belief that contradicts all available evidence.

Understanding the fallout from the intense polarization of this election will take time. But research into social and political psychology can offer some insight into this response from Trump supporters.

A good analysis but it simply describes the well known cravings of reptilian brains: They need to have the world explained to them in 3 word chants. Anything more nuanced is just too much work.

1. Maybe we need to keep chanting "Trump is the antichrist" over and over.....

So it sticks in their reptilian, easily programmed brains?

5. And six syllables. Way too much for them to handle.

The same intellectual impediment that gives us "Democrat Party" instead of "Democratic Party."

4. Some of Hitler's Nazis escaped to Latin America after WWII

Some of them remain there unrepentant, and even openly support their facist cause to this very day. This could end after they have all died of old age, assuming none of their ideologies have been embraced by any of their heirs. I offer this as food for thought.

8. Life is hard and I refuse to deal with it.

I want to go back to 1960, when things made sense. Someone told me that they had the answer and they would gladly think for me. It's the best answer in history, the likes of which the world has never seen.
