In Part 1, I quickly skimmed over what we did at the Doe Network, and to correct that, here's a little more information.
Finding a missing person is one thing, and that's hard enough, but trying to match up an unidentified body with a missing person is a whole 'nother ball of wax.
Once a body is found, LE immediately cordons off the area, and then photos and measurements are taken. After that, the forensic team takes over and scours the area for any clues and bags anything that remotely seems relevant.
After the body is moved, autopsied, and along with all the evidence, it's then determined what the cause of death was. Whether it was a death by an unknown cause, accident, suicide, natural cause, or by homicidal intent, and unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to tell because of the condition of the body, but that's not always impossible.
Most of you know this already from movies, TV, or reading books, but what is rarely mentioned or explained is what happens when you can't identify a deceased person.
After LE exhaust all possible means of identifying the deceased, and even if LE can prove that it's a homicide, there's not much more they can really do about it.
Why? Because of the way homicide investigations are conducted. First, they interview family members and close associates, collecting alibis, and then they try to construct a timeline of when they were last seen alive and what they did until then, but all of that's impossible if you don't know who the person is.
About all they can do at that point is appeal to the public and ask for more information, and that's where the Doe Network and other similar organizations come into play.
Some of the volunteers with the Doe Network did spend time looking for missing persons, but mostly, what our group did was match the unidentified with the missing.
There was no set procedure for doing this because each case is different, but basically what needed to be done was to narrow it down to a specific area where they were from, and then down to a specific group of people that were still missing.
Two things that you had to keep in mind:
1) The unidentified might never have been reported as missing.
2) Just because an unidentified was found in one area doesn't mean that's where they came from or died.
After one of the team picked out an unidentified to concentrate on, they examined all the clues LE supplied, and then went from there.
Anything can be used as a clue, clothes, hairstyle, tattoos, nail polish, scrapes and bruises, broken bones, teeth, eyeglasses etc.
Let's pretend that you've chosen an unidentified, looked over the evidence, and for some reason, the picture of one tattoo looks familiar, so you decide to run that lead down and see what comes up.
Unless you're an experienced tattoo artist, the first thing you'd need to do is to get educated and learn everything you can about it. You can either hit the books, search the web, or talk with someone who's already an expert.
There must be tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of tattoo shops all over the world, and most of them have websites and contact information. There's also chatrooms, bulletin boards, websites, and Facebook pages run by and for tattoo enthusiast.
While you're talking with them online, or in person, make sure you mention what you're working on and show them the photo.
You might find out that the tattoo was probably done in prison, or that the style is from a specific artist, or that everyone and their brother gets that particular tattoo.
By the time you get done with all of that, you should have tons of information, but also hundreds of new leads and possible avenues to follow, until finally, you get an "AHA!" moment, and that's when all the pieces start to fall into place.
You also have to realize that there's a reason why more than 40,000 bodies are still unidentified in the US, and that the solution very rarely ever just drops in your lap, if it ever drops at all, but when it does, all that work, time, and energy will've been worth it.
For me, it was also a sad moment, because now a missing person was no longer just missing anymore, and all their hopes and dreams were gone too, and that's the part that always made me cry and still does.
Anyway, the members used the group chatroom (Yahoo) to communicate back and forth, and it's where everyone got updated on current searches, results, and also request for advice and suggestions on what to do next.
It was madness just trying to keep track of it, but that was somebody else's job, thank God.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert on cellphones or smartphones, but I'm sure many of them do this, and I'm also sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but please, read the whole post first.
When you send a text, and your phone can't find a tower, it will keep it on file UNTIL it finds one, and then it will send it. This is known as a store and forward service.
The interesting thing about signals from cell towers is that sometimes (with the right atmospheric conditions) they'll go further than they normally would, and will sometimes even bend around corners.
What that means is if you get lost in an area where there's no service, and you decide to keep moving, your phone will send the text as soon as it finds one of those rouge signals. Telephone engineers can then look at the data and tell which tower the signal originated from, and from that, they can narrow down the search area.
Of course, most survivalist will tell you that the best thing to do if you get lost is stay in one place, but sometimes that's not possible, and that's when this trick is most effective.
As a matter of fact, this is exactly what happened when James Kim and his family got lost. He didn't make it, but his family did:

On the afternoon of December 4, John Rachor, a local helicopter pilot unaffiliated with any formal search effort, spotted Mrs. Kim and her two daughters walking on a remote road. After he radioed the family's position to authorities, the three were airlifted out of the area and transferred to a nearby hospital.
Law enforcement officials said that the discovery of the cellphone connection, and the subsequent analysis of the log data, was the critical breakthrough that ultimately resulted in the rescue of Kim's wife and daughters by helicopter.

Airline to confiscate cabin crew’s passports after second flight attendant goes missing during layover

An airline has said it will confiscate cabin crew passports during layovers after the second flight attendant in six months went missing.
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) issued the directive after a member of crew failed to turn up for the return leg of a round-trip from Lahore to Toronto over the weekend.
The unnamed employee from Islamabad flew out on flight PK798, touching down on 29 January, but did not show up for the flight back to Pakistan.
A very similar incident occurred in July 2020, reports One Mile at a Time, when a PIA flight attendant named Yasir went missing from the crew hotel during a layover in Toronto.
When contacted by the airline, he informed officials that he was going to stay in another city. After that he became unreachable.

Missing teen snowmobiler built snow cave to survive until rescuers arrived
(CNN) — After going missing while on a snowmobile, a Canadian teenager managed to survive by building a snow cave to stay in until he was found.
A 17-year-old in British Columbia, who has not been named, built himself a snow cave the backcountry to shelter in after being separated from his group, according to South Cariboo Search and Rescue.
At around 6:15 pm on Saturday, 100 Mile House Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) was notified of an overdue snowmobiler.
Family and friends of the teen had returned to a parking lot, but he had never showed, according to a news release from RCMP.

Missing 15-Year-Old Teen From Taylor, Gloria Alvarado, Found Safe After Missing Two Months

(CBS Detroit) – Two months after a missing teen girl’s family pleaded for her safe return, and police say she has been found safe.
15-year-old Gloria Alvarado of Taylor went missing last November.
Police have not released any details about her disappearance.
Another missing Taylor teenager, 14-year-old Marissa Peters, is still missing.
Families of both girls held a joint press conference last fall to find the girls.
Peters was last seen in May 2020.

Dan Colegate claims Esther Dingley may have come across a hunter.
The partner of a British hiker missing in France has said she could have been harmed by someone who "saw an opportunity in a lone female".
Esther Dingley, 37, vanished from Port de la Glere in late November while on a solo trek along the French-Spanish border.
Her partner Dan Colegate claims that despite the coronavirus lockdown in place at the time, the "possibility of Esther encountering an individual with a weapon remains".
"In such a mountainous location, there is no practical way to police anybody choosing to ignore the COVID-19 restrictions," he said in a statement issued by the LBT Global - formally the Lucie Blackman Trust.

SURVIVED: Baby Found 17 Years Later

It was 1997 in Cape Town, South Africa. Celeste and Morne Nurse welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Zephany Nurse. For the next 3 days, they recovered in the hospital. However, that is when Celeste would fall asleep with Zephany right next to her in a cot. When she woke up, a nurse was asking her where her daughter had gone. She had disappeared. That is when she remembered another nurse who had been in their room while she fell asleep. Yet, none of the other staff had heard of this woman. Other patients had seen this woman though, she had been in their rooms, with their babies as well. Yet for the next 17 years, the family had no idea where their baby girl had gone. They had 3 more children and their other daughter Cassidy would unknowingly solve a case with a selfie. Zephany Nurse had survived. Biden orders to ‘reunify’ families at U.S.-Mexico border, enhance legal immigration

Feb. 2 (UPI) — President Joe Biden will take action on Tuesday to reform the federal government’s immigration policy, which the White House says is designed to keep families together, streamline legal migration and study unlawful border crossings.
Biden has already signed multiple executive orders related to immigration since he took office on Jan. 20, but Tuesday’s actions represent the most concerted federal effort yet to reunite migrant families who were controversially separated under former President Donald Trump‘s “zero tolerance” policy.
The presidential actions will include a task force to “reunify families,” the White House said in a statement Tuesday. It aims to “find parents and children separated by the Trump administration” and will ultimately recommend steps to “prevent such tragedies from occurring again.”
A Justice Department filing in December said at the time that more than 600 parents of migrant children, who’d been separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, were still missing.

Monument honoring Atlanta’s missing and murdered children is a step closer to reality

ATLANTA — The Atlanta City Council can move forward with legislation to implement the Atlanta child murders monument. It was adopted based on a recommendation from Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ Children’s Memorial Taskforce.
The mayor appointed the members of the task force using members in the community. They were given instruction to find appropriate acknowledgment of the lives cut short during the Atlanta child murders.
After a search around the country, the city is authorized to enter into an agreement with Gordon Huether + Partners, Inc. to complete the project.

3 accused of trafficking missing teen after traffic stop

A traffic stop in Bunkie resulted in the arrests of three people and the rescue of a 15-year-old juvenile from what police say was human trafficking.
A Bunkie Police Department officer stopped a vehicle on Monday, and Louisiana State Police was requested to assist after the teen — reported missing from Texas — was found inside, according to a state police release.
Details of why the vehicle was stopped were not included.
The investigation determined that the teen had been sexually exploited and was being trafficked from the Houston area, it reads.

BIZARRE Disappearances and Missing Shoes

Every year hundreds of people go missing in the wilds of North America. David Paulides, investigative journalist and ex detective has spent years investigating the circumstances under which these people go missing. These people however, don’t go missing under circumstances you might expect often they go missing without a trace, right under the nose of their friends and family.
Sniffer dogs are unable to pick up a scent and are often found whimpering and walking around in circles. Park rangers and other authorities involved are reluctant to speak up, almost as if they are aware something bizarre is happening, but don’t want to cause a panic. Strange weather patterns sometimes erupt right after someone goes missing, almost as if nature itself doesn’t want the missing to be found. The victims that’re found dead are often in a place that has been searched thoroughly by the Search and Rescue teams, other times they’re found in places of extreme elevation without an explanation as to how they got there. Experienced hunters that understand the woods and their surroundings better than most go missing, right under the nose of their companions. And, if that’s not strange enough, items of clothing are often missing, or found inside out and the shoes also go missing. To make matters even more strange, the feet or socks of the victim are clean, leaving experts and authorities baffled.
For those that are found, they often have very strange tales to tell. Children who are found detail that they were fed berries by Mr. Bear, while others have no memory of even being missing. Paulides has noted in the past that the abducted are often first, or last in line when hiking through remote areas, almost as if they are snatched, but no screams are ever heard.

The Bennington Triangle Unexplained Disappearances

In Southern Vermont, northeast of Bennington lies a vast, beautiful, yet mysterious area of backcountry. It’s approximately 36 squares miles of unbroken wilderness with 12 peaks of over 3,000 feet in its Mountain range. The area is encapsulated by the Green Mountain National Forest; the forest itself is incredibly dense and supports a variety of wildlife including beavers, moose, coyote’s, black bear, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and ruffed grouse. The forest has also been referred to as the state’s granite backbone due to the sheer amount present. It is this area where we can find the Bennington Triangle.
On the outskirts of the Bennington Triangle lies the town of Glastenbury. Glastenbury was originally charted in 1761 by Benning Wentworth who was the governor of New Hampshire. The town didn’t settle officially until the 1800s, but it was doomed from the start. The dense and rough terrain made the area dangerous and difficult to develop; the short growing season didn’t ease the settler's struggle either, and the town would become officially disorganized by the State of Vermont in 1937.
As the years went by the obscure small town, whose population peaked at 241 came to the forefront when the inexplicable events that happened on its doorstep began to circulate, and in 1992 the legend of the Bennington Triangle was born. Author and folklorist Joseph Citro first coined the term and stated that the area was the most haunted area of Vermont, but the strangeness didn’t start with Joseph, nor the town.
The Native American’s spoke of the land being cursed and refused to travel anywhere near the mountains within the now known Green Mountain National Forest. The Native Americans would speak of those who went before them who would vanish in the area and never return to them. They also speak of a completely bizarre legend; an enchanted stone that wanders the mountain range which opens up and swallows a person whole if they venture too close.

Alaska National Park and Wilderness Disappearances

The state of Alaska was acquired by the United States of America in 1867. Secretary of State William Seward was the man in charge of arranging the purchase of the land from Russia and as such, the territory was dubbed “Seward’s Folly.” There were many critics of this transaction given its apparent lack of resources, however the purchase proved to be a major success for the states, not only in its inherent strategic position, but the discovery of gold in the 1890s encouraged a stampede of prospectors and settlers. The land, which is also the largest state in the American Union in terms of its sheer size was declared officially as the 49th state in 1959.
But the land we call Alaska today has a wealth of ancient history with evidence of habitation dating back to between 14,000 BC and 10,000 BC. At that point in history existed a land bridge which extended from Siberia to Eastern Alaska which allowed for heavy migration of both humans and animals. Today, the Athabaskans, Aleuts, Inuit, Yupik, Tlingit and Haida remain, and with these natives comes many unusual accounts and folklore of the area.
The Inuit people speak of a creature known as the Qalupalik; according to the Inuit’s, this creature resembles a woman with green skin, long hair and very long fingernails. It’s said that the Qalupalik resides in the sea and hums to entice people closer before taking them deep into the ocean.
The Inuit’s, among other native groups also speak of the Alaska Bushmen, dubbed Tornits. Tales of the Tornits have been told since humans first crossed the land bridge to Alaska all those thousands of years ago. The Inuit people were said to have mastered kayak construction which gave them a huge advantage when hunting. The Tornits on the other hand were said to be unable to build them and stole one from the Inuit’s. This wasn’t taken very kindly and brought about conflict between the two factions which drove the Tornits away from the land.
According to the Anchorage Daily News:
“Since that time, many stories have come out of the bush of hunters disappearing never to be seen again. Apparently, hunters and the Tornits no longer peacefully shared common hunting grounds.”
It seems that some natives believed that the Tornits were stalking their hunters, while others believed that their actions of driving the Tornits from the land had brought about a curse on their people.
The natives also speak of the Tizheruk, which the native Inuit’s described as large, snake-like creatures of unknown origin. The natives believed them to roam the Alaskan waters and said that they were up to 15 feet long and would snatch people from their kayaks and while near the waters.
These are just some and while there are others you obviously can’t do much with folklore in terms of determining if the native peoples actually believed these things were occurring, or if it was just a method of keeping their children in line, but whatever the case may be it is still an interesting part of the Alaskan, and her native’s history.

“Since authorities began keeping records in 1988, 60,700 people have been reporting missing in Alaska. That’s five people per 1000 residents reported missing every year. On a yearly basis, an average of 2,250 people disappear in Alaska, twice the national average. Some of these people are found alive and well, while the remains of others are found, but many disappear without a trace.”

Missing 411 - The BIZARRE National Park Disappearance Problem

It sounds like an urban legend: an author and former policeman was on vacation when he was approached by two off-duty rangers who asked him to look into the number of people who go missing in the national park system. They were too afraid of retaliation to appear in uniform and asked that the national park they work for and the time period they met the author be kept secret.
The cases he found were strange and numerous enough that the man, David Paulides, has since written six volumes of work documenting the phenomena. The books, called the Missing 411 series, explore what Paulides calls a ‘mysterious series of worldwide disappearances defying logical and conventional explanations.’

‘Dim’ dognappers run away in terror after picking on the wrong breed

A pair of ‘dognappers’ ran away in fright after a botched attempt to steal a Belgian Malinois – a breed often used by police and the military.
Two men approached 30 kilo Nellie, and her owner Toby Currier, in Portsmouth last Wednesday.
Toby, 19, said one of the men made a fuss of the dog and the other asked questions about her, before making a sudden grab for her lead.
That did not go down well with Nellie, who her owner says is normally ‘gentle’ but bared her teeth at the hapless pair before being restrained. Toby explained to The Daily Star: ‘Nellie started barking at them and then lunged at the men. She almost grabbed one of them as they had clearly startled her.

Force to withold (sic) surnames of vulnerable missing persons

Avon and Somerset Constabulary has adopted a new policy of releasing only the first names of missing persons.
Surnames will now be withheld from any public appeals for help in finding vulnerable missing people in an effort to better protect that person’s privacy in future. The force is believed to be the first in the country to adopt such a policy.
A spokesperson for the force said: “We’ve had new guidance suggesting that appeals for vulnerable missing people should be restricted to the first name only, to reduce the potential negative impact on the individual.”

Senator introduces bill to help find missing Alaskans

A bill before the Alaska Senate seeks to make it easier to find missing people.
Sen. Click Bishop, R-Fairbanks, introduced Senate Bill 63 on Friday, which would allow a court to grant a family member or friend access to view bank accounts and phone records of a missing person. The court permission would be granted on a temporary and limited basis.
“One person missing is too many people,” Bishop said.
The bill arises out of a growing number of missing Interior Alaskans, particularly in the Alaska Native community. At least 11 Alaskans, most Native, have gone missing in the past year, resulting in growing fear in the community. A crowded vigil on Jan. 23 at the Chief Peter John Tribal Building in Fairbanks drew attendees holding signs of missing loved ones, with speakers calling for more action from law enforcement agencies.
Under Bishop’s bill, the court would appoint the petitioner as a temporary guardian of the missing person, allowing the petitioner access to financial or bank records and wireless telephone service records. The idea is to glean information from the accounts that could help find the missing person, such as the location of a debit card transaction or a ping off a cell tower. To prove the person is missing, the court would require the results of “a reasonably diligent search made by the petitioner for the individual,” according to the bill. The temporary guardianship would not last longer than 30 days.

But no, there were the remains of Lana, her truck upside down in the muck, her blonde hair floating in the water.
Now that Frankie has found Lana, a deed she did without expectation of pay, she returns to the internet looking for another missing person. She has no training, no detective license and no connection to the person she is looking for. She doesn’t even have a home or friends. Her next choice is Angelique Lovelie Badeau, a Haitian teenager who lived with brother and aunt in Mattapan, a crime-ridden neighborhood in Boston.
One day, Angelique, a sweet girl and good student, didn’t come home. Later her school bag and cell phone were found hidden in the bushes outside of her school. Her family hopes she’ll be home soon but that was almost a year ago.
Frankie hopes if she locates Angelique the ending will turn out differently than it has with the other 16 people she has found — all of whom were dead.
“There are people out there like Frankie who spend their time looking for missing people,” said Lisa Gardner, author of "Before She Disappeared". “There are dog handlers who volunteer to have their dogs search for missing people for free, pilots who fly their planes over areas where someone has gone missing, and those who use their computer and social media skills to help — all for free.”

A woman who had been missing for over three decades was recently found dead inside of her submerged vehicle, according to authorities.
The White Plains Police Department confirmed in a press release this week that Brenda Kerber's remains were found inside a car in the Muscoot Reservoir on Jan. 19.
Authorities believe Kerber's cause of death was suicide by drowning, noting their determination was based on "a review of the evidence in the case and the recent findings from the vehicle, along with the Medical Examiner's exam."
Kerber was last seen on Sept. 28, 1989 but wasn't reported missing by her landlord until Oct. 8, 1989, according to the press release.

Officials said that more than 600,000 people disappear each year.
National Missing Persons Day was Wednesday, Feb. 3. It's meant to memorialize people who have been missing in the U.S. and focus people's attention on helping to find them.
According to the National Unidentified and Missing Persons System, more than 600,000 people disappear each year.
Luckily, some of them have been found and (the) families, learning about what happened to a missing person, and possibly seeing them once again, can fill what otherwise seems like an unfillable void.
"There are people and children every day going missing in this day and time, and there shouldn't be," said Darla Jackson, a historian who wrote Harlan County Haunts which explores the county's myths and tales. "With our technology, we should not have all of these missing people, but we do."

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - According to government statistics, 600,000 people go missing each year. Some are runaways, part of a crime, or just vanish. According to Brent Patterson with the Madison County Sherriff’s Department, the county sees about 100 missing people a year.
But, he says what’s overwhelming is the daily national amount. “We see approximately 2,300 cases a day nationwide and that’s entirely too many.”
Patterson says on days like National Missing Persons Day, it’s a day for awareness, to let community members know, “We’re working on this and you can as well.”
When a loved one goes missing, it can be the scariest thing one experiences, the not knowing of what has happened, Patterson says even if you think you don’t have enough information, you could be a huge help.

Update: Missing Roseburg teen located safe, non-custodial mother arrested
The News-Review Feb 2, 2021
A 14-year-old missing Roseburg girl was found safe late Tuesday night and her biological non-custodial mother was arrested, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office announced Wednesday morning.
Shena Horton was reported missing Sunday from her home in the 600 block of Newton Creek Road. She was found unharmed at a residence in the Green District at approximately 11:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Her biological non-custodial mother, Gloria Shannon Kicinski, 38, of Roseburg, was arrested and charged with second-degree custodial interference.
The Oregon Department of Human Services, Child Welfare Division announced Horton's safe return home Wednesday morning.

Testimony begins in homicide case involving missing Battle Creek woman yet to be found

Derek Horton filed a missing person's report with the Battle Creek Police Department on June 24, 2020, stating he had last seen his girlfriend Amber Griffin two nights before. Horton was charged three days later with one count of open murder. Griffin's body is yet to be found.
BATTLE CREEK, MI — Preliminary testimony began Tuesday in the homicide case involving the boyfriend of a missing Battle Creek woman presumed dead.
Derek Depree Horton, 26, was charged June 27 with killing his 27-year-old girlfriend Amber Griffin, who he had reported missing to the Battle Creek police three days earlier. Griffin still has not been found by police or heard from by family members or friends, according to police.
“I have to prove she is dead,” Calhoun County Prosecutor David Gilbert said at one point. “There’s no body.”
Horton appeared Tuesday, Jan. 19 in front of Calhoun County District Judge Tracie Tomak via Zoom from the county jail, where he has been held without bond since late June.

Forensic investigative firm ties Texas cold case to missing Salina woman

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A forensic firm from Virginia has pieced together a cold case from Texas involving a missing woman from Salina, Kan.
Innovative Forensic, an investigative genetic genealogy firm, says it has resolved a 55-year-old cold case that came out of Pecos, Texas.
According to Innovative Forensic, on July 5, 1966, a couple checked into the Ropers Motel in Pecos under the names Mr. and Mrs. Russell Battuon. The couple had been seen near the pool earlier in the day by employees of the motel, but later, while the male was asleep maid found the female unresponsive in the motel swimming pool. It said she was pulled from the water and taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Innovative Forensic said the male awoke during the commotion and took everything from their room, including any identification of the pair. It said police have been unable to identify the female victim or locate her male companion. It said with no available dental records or fingerprints, the case went cold for 55 years.

When Pushpa Salvi saw photos and videos on social media of some homeless people who were taken out of the city last Friday, she recognised her husband Anil Salvi (50) among them, sitting on Nipania bypass road on Indore’s outskirts.
The man, who is mentally disturbed, left his home here last month. The woman, after being unable to find him, had subsequently lodged a missing person’s complaint with police. Last week, she recognised her husband in the visuals of some homeless people who were dumped out of the city.
“I had filed a missing person’s report at Chandan Nagar police station after I did not find him. On January 29, I got a call from someone that my husband was found in Nipania area following which I took a taxi to go there,” the woman told reporters here on Tuesday.
The woman, aged around 48, said she did not know the exact way and the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) employees guided the cab driver following which she reached the spot.

Michael Joseph Patterson was arrested during the Bowling Green, Kentucky sting on October 21, 2007.
Patterson used to be a reserve police officer in Lebron, Indiana, until he was fired for using police car light to impersonate
an on-duty police officer.
On June 11, 2008, Patterson was convicted of:
Traveling In Interstate Commerce For The Purpose Of Engaging In A Sexual Act With A Minor
His case was picked up federally because he crossed state lines to travel to Kentucky.
He received 7 years in federal prison and 10 years supervised release.
In 2011 Michael Joseph Patterson represented himself in a civil lawsuit
against NBC Universal, Inc., asking for $40,000,000 each in monetary and punitive damages.
He also asked for injunctive relief in the form of having all information about him taken off television and NBC's website.
Patterson’s complaint was entirely void of any factual allegations
regarding his claim for negligence, and the case was dismissed.
Patterson alleged that on October 21, 2007, NBC Universal, Inc., in concert with local police authorities, conducted a "sting operation" in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
As part of the sting, Patterson claimed that NBC Universal, Inc. "lured" him to the sting house.
He alleges that he had been chatting with an underage "decoy" in an adult chat room.
The decoy invited Patterson to meet her in person.
Patterson initially told her she was too young. However, according to Patterson, the decoy, knowing of his "vulnerability," persisted, and he agreed to meet the girl at a house in Bowling Green, more than a five-hour drive away.
When Patterson arrived at the house, he was placed under arrest and taken into custody by the local police.
Patterson states that NBC Universal, Inc. was present at the sting house and filmed his arrest and search. NBC Universal, Inc. then aired the events on national television in a series entitled "To Catch a Predator." Patterson claims that NBC Universal, Inc. also has made material related to his on-line conversations with the decoy available to the public on various internet sites.
Patterson alleges that NBC Universal, Inc.'s "libel, slander and defamatory statements" have caused him mental and emotional stress and ruined his reputation.
Patterson also alleges that NBC Universal, Inc.'s participation in his arrest and search violated his constitutional rights under the Fourth Amendment. He also asserts state-law claims for intentional disclosure of private facts, intrusion on the right to be left alone, harassment/intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligence. Finally, he asserts that NBC Universal, Inc. is liable for violating the "Journalistic Code of Ethics."
As relief, Patterson asks for $40,000,000 each in monetary and punitive damages. He also asks for injunctive relief in the form of having all information about him taken off television and NBC Universal, Inc.'s website.

A: The Missing Pet Partnership specializes in capturing skittish, hard-to-catch dogs (and cats). The problem with panicked dogs is that most rescuers call the dog to try and get the dog to come to them … big mistake! Never call a stray dog. Don’t look at it, don’t pat your leg, and don’t walk towards the dog. If the dog has a skittish temperament, typically he is in “fight or flight” mode and will be running in fear. The moment that the first would-be rescuer pats your leg, moves towards the dog, and is saying “Come here, come here,” the dog often will associate that body language with the fear and adrenaline.
So, what happens is the dog is running because people are looking at him, going towards him, calling him, and he is getting more and more afraid. When you add into the mix the owner (or a rescuer) who is panicked (and conveys that in their voice) it just freaks the dog out even more (like if it is running towards traffic). What you want to do instead is use calming signals and try to do something to calm and attract the dog. Lip licking, yawning, feigning like you’re eating food off the ground are such signals.

A kind couple found Peaches, who is old and deaf, standing in the middle of the road in the snowstorm and brought her to safety.
GREENPORT, NY — A little lost dog, old and deaf, is home safe after getting lost in Monday's snowstorm.
Doreen Clark of Greenport posted a message on Facebook: "If anyone has seen our precious Peaches, she is missing," she wrote. "Our hearts are broken."
On Monday, Peaches was let out as per the usual morning routine but didn't come right back as she normally does, or bark at the door, Clark said.
Peaches hadn't been feeling well the past couple of days, she said. "She's old and deaf," she added. "And of course, it has to be a blizzard, too. We were devastated."

Lawton woman finds missing dog on Facebook after two years

LAWTON, Okla. (TNN) - A Lawton woman who found her lost dog on Facebook after he was missing for two years is thankful for the lost and found pet groups and posts.
Some may call it good luck, but Paige Brown calls it a miracle.
“As soon as I got out of the car, he came running, was loving on me, jumped in my car, ready to go,” Brown said. “I was so excited I cried. I cried like a little baby because I just knew it was Milo.”
Her dog Milo went missing two years ago when her family lived in Cache. Ashlee Arnold found him in Bray about two weeks ago. He walked up to her parents’ house, all but skin and bones, and nearly missing an eye but looking for love.

Missing Person Stuck in Snowy Sierra Survives 1 Week Before Being Rescued

A Tahoe resident who got stuck in the snow during a drive through the Sierra survived for a week before being rescued by first responders, authorities said.
The missing person, identified only as a male, got trapped in the snow on a remote mountain road but managed to survive thanks to his winter clothing, camper and propane, the Sierra County Sheriff's Office said. When he was found, he was in "good" medical condition and declined treatment.
He departed Grass Valley for Truckee on Jan. 24, the sheriff's office said. Because Interstate 80 was closed due to snow, he decided to take Highway 49. His GPS took him off Highway 49 and onto Henness Pass Road, which he wasn't familiar with.
"This area of Sierra County is mountainous and gets heavy snowfall during the winter," the sheriff's office wrote on Facebook. "Henness Pass Road is only open during the summer months and is not plowed. While traveling up the road, he became stuck and could not turnaround."

A mom called 911 after her daughter wandered into a massive cornfield. Timberlyn Merritt is a busy stay-at-home mom. Her three-year-old daughter, Remy, is always on the go, and her one-year-old Yorkie is never far behind. Merritt says she left Remy on the swing set for just a minute and when she came back out, Remy was gone, and so was their dog Heath. More than 100 people joined in the search, combing through the 8-foot high corn stalks. But Remy was not alone. Heath never left her side.

A dog that disappeared after surviving a Brooklyn car crash that killed his owner has been found — and the victim’s fiancée couldn’t be happier.
The 2-year-old black cane corso went missing after his owner, Michael March, lost control of his car on the Belt Parkway Saturday morning and crashed near Flatbush Ave. in Marine Park.
The dog, named Shadow, fled the wreck, and wasn’t seen again for nearly a week until a pair of animal rescue experts tracked him down and reunited him with his grieving family.
“They had to break the window to get Michael out and he ran,” said March’s fiancée, Ann Marie Fasano. “He kept running. He bolted across the Belt Parkway and didn’t get hit. Then he lived through a snowstorm and had no food all these days. If it wasn’t for these people I would never have my dog back.”
The pet detectives, Kim Fraser and Teddy Henn, spent five days wading through knee-deep snow in their search for the missing mastiff.

Another Peoria missing-persons case is now being investigated as a homicide – the second this week

PEORIA – Peoria police officers had been searching for Jeffrey Blevins since the 49-year-old was reported missing on Wednesday.
But police say his disappearance is now being investigated as a homicide instead.
Friday morning, according to a news release issued by police, detectives found human remains inside a recreational vehicle in the 8300 block of north Knoxville Avenue, the same block on which Blevins was reported missing.
The identity of the victim is not known, police said, while emphasizing that "the original missing person investigation is now being treated as a homicide investigation."

Peoria woman reported missing is found dead less than 12 hours later, treated as homicide

PEORIA — A woman who was reported missing Wednesday night was found dead near East Peoria Community High School on Thursday morning.
It wasn't clear what happened to Mona R. Ellison, 50, nor was it clear if police had a suspect, but the death was being treated as a homicide, said Peoria Police Department spokeswoman Amy Dotson.
Ellison was reported missing on Wednesday at about 7:15 p.m., and through their investigation, detectives discovered her body in a wooded area behind a multi-unit residential building in the 100 block of Woodrow Drive in East Peoria.
Foul play was suspected, Dotson said, and what had been a missing person case was converted into a homicide investigation. The Tazewell County Coroner's Office is assisting with the investigation, and an autopsy will be done Friday to determine the manner and cause of death.

Missing person found exhausted after battling through 'serious snow drifts'

Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team was called out to help search for a missing farm worker near Selkirk at 6pm this evening.
Police Scotland requested the assistance of the mountain rescue team to help trace a farm worker who had gone missing near Selkirk this evening, Thursday, February, 4.
14 team members were travelling to the RV when the missing person was located safe and well, just as the first team members were arriving at the scene.
The individual wasn’t hurt but was exhausted after walking through some “serious snow drifts.”

Missing Persons Day (Feb 4): 1,300 people are currently missing in Colorado

DENVER (KDVR) — Thursday, Feb. 4 is Missing Persons Day in Colorado. The day aims to honor the 1,300 people who are currently missing in the state.
According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI), 600 of those individuals have been missing for more than one year. For this year’s Missing Persons Day, the CBI has posted the names of all 600 people on its website.
The CBI invited the families and friends of missing people to post a tribute online.

Gone Missing: Who are they? Who’s trying to find them?

They can be anybody! A family member, friend, colleague. Did they leave on their own? Were they kidnapped? Did something else happen to them? Unfortunately for some, those answers may never be known.
A prominent one, currently, is Jennifer Farber Dulos. Go back more than 47 years and there was 7-year-old Janice Pockett. In between, there was 10-year-old Bianca Lebron, and now there’s 1-year-old Vanessa Morales. These are just some of the people who have gone missing without a trace over the years in Connecticut that received lots of notoriety. However, there are many more that have gone missing and still go missing without all the publicity.
Gary MacNamara, former Fairfield Police Chief and now Director of Public Safety at Sacred Heart University, says circumstances dictate where attention is focused in such cases citing the Dulos case with a missing person but the addition of an apparent crime scene that adds urgency to it.
Newington Police Chief Stephen Clark says how a missing persons report is handled may differ, depending on if it’s an adult or child, but every report is taken seriously.

‘A new hope’: Missing girl’s family still hurting 18 years after she disappeared

KENNEWICK – Sofia Juarez’s disappearance left a hole in her family’s life that’s still apparent 18 years later.
“We plead with anybody that knows anything …. Please just come forward and let that light shine in that dark area because this family needs closure,” her aunt Victoria Juarez said through tears Thursday.
“It’s been very hard just witnessing the ache and the suffering and the pain that it has taken in this family…. We want to know what happened,” she said.
Sofia was one day shy of her 5th birthday when she apparently tried to follow her mother’s boyfriend to a store. The Kennewick girl was never seen again.
Her aunt and four relatives spoke Thursday afternoon outside the Kennewick police station as the Washington State Patrol unveiled new photos of what Sofia might look like at 23.
The missing poster semi-truck trailers are part of the WSP’s Homeward Bound Program that will travel across the states.
The unveiling was on the 18th anniversary of the day the little girl walked away from her 15th Avenue home with a dollar to spend.

Mystery deepens after 2 young boys disappear from their own backyard
Frustration is mounting in California City, California, where several prominent billboards read: "Where are the boys?"
Brothers Orson and Orrin West -- ages 3 and 4, respectively -- have been missing since Dec. 21, when their adopted parents reported their disappearance.
The reward for information on the two missing boys now totals $100,000. Both boys are about 3 feet tall and weigh around 40 pounds. They were last seen wearing black sweaters and dark-colored sweatpants, according to police.
Adoptive parents Trezell and Jacqueline West told police that the boys were last seen playing in their backyard.
Police suspect foul play was involved in the boys' disappearance, according to California City Police Chief Jon Walker.
"We did a thorough search of the surrounding areas and [the toddlers were] not there so that tells me that they didn't just keep walking," Walker said. "Someone picked them up, which would lead to foul play."

"I just know they were really good parents as far as I'm concerned," Wanda West, the grandmother of the toddlers said about the children's adoptive parents in an exclusive interview with ABC News Saturday.
Brothers Orson and Orrin West -- ages 3 and 4, respectively, were reported missing by their adoptive parents, Trezell and Jacqueline West.
"We offered a reward out of our own pockets," the missing boys' uncle, Jamal Watkins, told ABC News.
That reward, initially offered at $30,000 by extended members of the West family, has increased to $120,000 -- contributed by multiple parties.

For Barb Gusse, a Brooklyn Center grandmother, it was just another chilly February afternoon. But she braved the cold to do something she loves.
“I was out feeding my birds, because it's so cold,” she said. “You know you have to keep them fed, you know.”
That’s when she glanced across the street to the car lot outside Cross of Glory Lutheran Church, where she saw a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, its engine running.
It sat there for 20 minutes, but Gusse says she couldn’t tell if anyone was inside.
Then an Amber Alert went off on her phone detailing how a Jeep was stolen from Humboldt Avenue in north Minneapolis around 12:17 p.m. and that 1-year-old Da’Merion White was in the back seat.

8 rescued, 3 arrested in human trafficking operation at truck stops, authorities say

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — At least three people were arrested and eight people rescued — including two children — following a human trafficking operation Friday night at two St. Joseph truck stops, according to Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt.
Five women, one man, a 2-year-old and an infant were rescued in the operation at Bucky’s and Love’s Travel Stop, according to a news release from Schmitt’s office. They were given services including food, lodging, medical services and counseling.
“This unprecedented success should send clear a message to traffickers: you are not welcome in Missouri, and you can’t hide any longer,” Schmitt said in a statement.
The Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, in Schmitt’s office, coordinated with several law enforcement agencies, including the St. Joseph Police Department, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kansas City Police Department, Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, U.S. Marshals, Department of Corrections, Probation and Parole and State Parks.

Letter: Racial inequity doesn't play any significant role in searching for missing people
To the editor:
Once again we see apparently the Critical Race Theory being mentioned this time over missing people of color (Study: Missing people of color gets less press, The Patriot Ledger, Jan. 30-31).
I agree with Nastalie Wilson, co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation, that it does take "all of us - law enforcement, the community as well as the media - to bring awareness to our missing and to help us find them. We all play an important role."
However, I agree very much with Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne when he stated that race basically doesn't have a racial component in how Massachusetts police departments investigate missing persons. I am bothered when the issue of race gets thrown at everything including searching for missing individuals of any age. I don't think racial inequity, white supremacy or systemic racism play any significant role searching for missing people, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, etc.
A big page one headline about missing people of color doesn't cut it. Our print and broadcast media needs to improve coverage of the missing.

Rutherford County rescue crews locate missing child in minutes with thermal drone technology

SMYRNA, TN (WSMV) - A Smyrna child is back home with his family tonight after thermal imaging helped search and rescue crews find him, despite chilly and rainy weather.
The juvenile was reported missing in a patch of woods off Smyrna’s West Fork Park Saturday evening. With the help of thermal imaging drones, rescue crews were able to track him down from a birds eye perspective.
“We are used to being out for hours if not days on a search,” says Jeff Clementi, a member of Rutherford County Fire and Rescue and StormPoint, a non-profit emergency rescue organization, who teamed up to find the missing kid on Saturday. Clementi was the drone operator.
“It was raining out, hard to see the monitor,” Clementi recaps. “We can set temperature ranges for whatever it is we are searching for.”

Podcast helps family of missing Labrador City man learn more about the night he disappeared in Alberta
In 1997, Danny Gaulton left Labrador City and went out west for work, like many before him.
Four months after he moved to Grande Prairie, Alta., he went missing, and for more than 20 years his family had no idea what happened to the 27-year-old on the night of Nov. 24, 1997.
But recently that changed. New information about Gaulton’s disappearance was uncovered after an Ontario-based podcast called "Whereabouts Unknown" was asked to look into the case.
“Witnesses described Danny’s unconscious and seemingly lifeless body being dragged by these men down a hallway and from the hotel,” "Whereabouts Unknown" host Ellen White said in the podcast.
White and her group, which specializes in cold cases involving missing people, were contacted by one of Danny's sisters, who was hoping the group would look into her brother's disappearance. The team behind the podcast put out a call on social media for any information on what might have happened to Danny Gaulton.

Gone Boys: Missing men go largely unnoticed, their stories underreported

The picture on Kelly McLeod’s missing person poster is easy to make judgments about. And some of those judgments would be correct. In the years before he disappeared, McLeod was an addict, a petty criminal who lived under a bridge in Campbell River. Kelly’s little sister, Loral, knows it’s a less than flattering photo.
“I still see him. It’s still Kelly to me,” Loral says. “When I see his mugshot picture, family members, they don’t like it, but it’s still him, you know. I always try to post another photo along with it so people can see that this is what drugs do to you. And he might look different. He still has the same heart. Although he looks the way he does, he’s still just the same loving, broken soul inside here.”
Kelly is one of Vancouver Island’s missing men. His story is part of a new podcast series called Gone Boys, the second season of Island Crime, which released its first episode on Monday.
Kelly McLeod has been missing since October 2019. His case is one of five highlighted in the new true crime podcast, Gone Boys.
In 2019, British Columbia had the highest number of missing adult reports per capita.
The majority of those reports involve adult males. Most, about 90 per cent, are resolved within a week, and almost all are resolved within a year.
But in recent years on Vancouver Island, some men who have gone missing, have remained missing.

Lost Ladysmith dog found after 12 days in snowy wilderness

After 12 days lost in the wilderness behind Ladysmith, Bono the King Doberman Pinscher, was found alive on the west side of Holland Lake.
“Seeing him again was so amazing,” his owner Cyan Maretic said. “He looks really thin, and I was so happy to see him for the first time in 12 days.”
Bono’s absence sparked a massive search effort joined by 30 community volunteers that combed the trails behind Ladysmith every day since he went missing on Jan. 26.
Avid backcountry explorer, Shelley Meyers, said she found Bono by coincidence while helping a friend fix their broken down vehicle near Holland Lake.
“I thought I was seeing things,” she said. “My friend had been under the Jeep working for about an hour, then all of the sudden, his dogs started acting weird — like they were smelling something. I wondered if it was Bono.”

‘He’s my whole world’: Ladysmith rallies together to find missing dog

Cyan Maretic last saw her three year old King Doberman Pinscher, Bono, on Tuesday Jan. 26 after taking him on a hike with friends up the Banon Creek logging road toward Holland Lake.
“At the very top of the mountain I noticed he went to the left. It’s not unlike him to disappear for 10 minutes. I didn’t think anything of it. Then 20 minutes went by, and I started to panic,” Maretic said.
Maretic retraced her steps, hiking up and down the mountainside in snow multiple times, but couldn’t find Bono.
Several of Maretic’s friends joined the effort to help find Bono, staying with her until 3 a.m. that night.

The two men were on their trash route early Monday when they spotted a gray car “ducked off” in a wooded field in St. Martin Parish, about 50 miles west of Baton Rouge, according to a video posted online. Inside the car was Jalisa Lassalle, 10, who authorities said had been kidnapped the night before.
“I thank God,” trash collector Dion Merrick says in the clip as officers lead the accused abductor, 33-year-old Michael Sereal, away in handcuffs. “He blessed us to find that little girl.”
Jalisa was reported missing from New Iberia on Sunday, and an Amber Alert was issued later that evening, KATC reported. It was Merrick and fellow city worker Brandon Antoine who spotted the sedan described in the alert as they worked their morning shift, New Iberia police said in statement announcing that the 10-year-old had been found safe.
Both men are employees with Pelican Waste & Debris, the sanitation company confirmed in a Facebook post.

Dyatlov Pass Tourists Go Missing While Visiting Area of Mysterious Hiking Incident

A group of tourists have gone missing in an infamous Russian mountain pass where nine people died under mysterious circumstances more than 60 years ago.
Eight tourists from Moscow who ventured into the Dyatlov Pass in the Ural region had not returned by Wednesday morning as expected, a local resident told E1.RU.
The source said: "They were supposed to leave at eight o'clock this morning. But they have not returned yet and there is no contact with them."
The tourists came to visit the pass to pay tribute to the nine people who died there in February 1959, the source reportedly added.

Richard Ramirez, known as The Night Stalker, is one of the most prolific and vicious serial killers to have terrorized the streets of Los Angeles in the ’80s. Now, Netflix’s docuseries “Night Stalker: Searching for a Serial Killer” delves into how investigators finally apprehended the killer, after he managed to evade law enforcement for a year.
Ramirez, first known as the “walk-in killer,” invaded homes, murdering and sexually assaulting the residents, from June 1984 to August 1985. He used a wide variety of weapons and would leave behind satanic symbols.
After finding prints on a stolen car and releasing a mugshot to the public, Ramirez was apprehended after he was subdued by a group of residents and was beaten before cops could step in.
On September 20, 1989, he was convicted of all charges: 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries, although he’s assumed to have committed many more crimes. He was sentenced to death — but in 2013, he died of cancer in prison, after serving 23 years on death row.

The Bodies Of Missing People Are Rapidly Turning Up In Mexico (HBO)

For three years, Mario Vergara has ventured regularly into the hills of the southern Mexican state of Guerrero, searching for the remains of his brother Tomás. Although he hasn't located his brother, he's found dozens of buried bodies—but this isn't unusual—in fact, it's only evidence of a much larger problem.
Vergara is part of a loose movement of buscadores, or searchers, who spurred to action after the disappearance of 43 students in Iguala. The students went missing after a confrontation with security forces in September, 2014 and the search for their remains resulted in the discovery of dozens of other bodies buried in mass graves.
The case of the 43 blew the cover off the epidemic of forced disappearances in Mexico, where more than 32,000 people are estimated to be missing. It's only one symptom of a series of deeply entrenched issues.
In Mexico, the vast majority of crimes go unpunished, countless government officials participate in organized crime, and the police and military have been deployed in massive numbers in an ostensible fight against the cartels. The result is a country where thousands of heavily armed men — be they private actors or agents of the state — can kill with impunity.

A mother in Edmonton whose son vanished in B.C. two years ago was given a gift on the anniversary of his disappearance Tuesday.
Toronto forensic artist Diana Trepkov designed an age-progression sketch of Kristofer Shawn Couture and presented it to his mother, Eva Couture, during a Zoom call.
“He’s age-progressed to 27, so it’s only two years– it’s around the eyes and it’s from my heart to you,” Trepkov told Eva on the call.
“It’s still Kris. His big smile and his beautiful Italian eyes. The eyes are the mirrors of the soul so I made sure I kept his eyes exactly like his eyes but of course… a little aging.”

‘Going the extra mile’: Work by Loudon County deputy, dispatcher reunites family with missing Kentucky man

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - An 83-year-old Kentucky man was found more than 200 miles from his home thanks to a Loudon County Sheriff’s deputy and an E-911 dispatcher.
Jon Steven Mirilovich, a former University of Kentucky and NC State offensive coordinator was reported missing Monday.
Deputy Austin Parton stopped Mirilovich for reckless manner around midnight on Interstate 75 while driving home after just completing his shift. Dispatcher Sue Everett relayed the missing person report out of Versailles, Kentucky, to Parton.
The Sheriff’s Office praised Parton and Everett for “going the extra mile” at the end of a shift.

San Francisco Rallied to Find a DoorDash Driver’s Missing Children

Spurred on by social media, residents searched the streets after Jeffrey Fang’s children were taken in a carjacking. The police ultimately found them, unharmed, across town.
“I was trying not to break down,” said Jeffrey Fang, a DoorDash delivery driver whose minivan was stolen with his children inside.
For four frantic hours last weekend, Jeffrey Fang’s two youngest children were lost on the streets of San Francisco — moving targets sitting, somewhere, in his carjacked silver minivan.
Mr. Fang, a DoorDash delivery driver, had been working on Saturday night when he encountered the carjacker in a quiet residential neighborhood. There was a brief struggle. A phone was snatched; an accomplice appeared. And in a matter of minutes, Mr. Fang’s van was gone, and the children with it.
While police officers searched the streets of the city, so too did a team of amateur sleuths, including some of Mr. Fang’s friends and several strangers. And around 1 a.m. on Sunday, the children were found in the van, which had been abandoned across town.
“They are OK,” Mr. Fang said in an interview on Monday. “I was able to finally get some sleep last night.”

Husband charged for murder after wife's 'suspicious' disappearance

Jonathan Greyblood allegedly admitted to police that 'something bad happened to his wife'
A Minnesota man was charged with murder in connection with the suspicious disappearance and death of his wife, court records show.
Jonathan Greyblood, 30, is facing two counts of second-degree murder -- one "with intent," but not premeditated, and the other "without intent," in connection with the death of 37-year-old Jeanine Greyblood, according to court documents.
He was booked on probable cause second-degree murder on Sunday after police discovered the body of his wife "under suspicious circumstances" one day after she went missing, the Little Falls Police Department said in a news release.
According to the criminal complaint obtained by Fox News, Jonathan Greyblood had reported his wife missing on Saturday morning. The night before, he claimed that he and his wife had been at a bar in Little Falls to "socialize" with some friends. Jonathan Greyblood then allegedly told police that the couple headed to a friend's home after the bar closed, but got into argument and left.

DENVER - After nearly four decades, a Denver family finally has some answers about what happened to Wendy Stephens.
Stephens was just 14 years old when she disappeared in 1983 in Denver; the teen’s parents had filed a missing person’s report, but police were unable to track the teen down.
The teen’s body was found a year after her disappearance in Washington and was linked to the Green River killer, but investigators were unable to identify it.
For nearly 40 years, Stephens was known as Bones-10 and was placed in the storage of the King County Medical Examiner’s Office.

One Woman is Tracking Thousands of Missing People (Autism is Her Superpower) - Digital Detectives

From watching the news, you might think that police exhaustively search for missing people - but aside from a few sensational cases, that burden mostly falls on family and friends of the missing. It’s very difficult - but Meaghan Good has made it her life’s work to make it a little easier. She compiles information on missing people for her website The Charley Project. It serves a number of different purposes: providing internet detectives with resources to help find missing people, providing families with the knowledge that somebody cared and a place to check for updates, and commemorating the life of a person who mattered and doesn’t deserve to simply disappear. With Meaghan’s help, a few cold cases have been closed, and many families have appreciated her efforts.
Meaghan Good’s story is also interesting. Growing up with autism, she was bullied and left school. She credits her autism with providing a singular focus, which in her case centered around true crime and unsolved cases of missing and exploited children. She began working passionately on an existing crowdsourced missing persons database (The Missing Persons Cold Case Network) before the person in charge of it retired, turned it over to her, and she overhauled it and turned it into “The Charley Project.”

Car of missing Texas woman found in lake 30 years after disappearance

The car belonging to Carey Mae Parker, a Texas woman missing since 1991, was recovered from Lake Tawakoni last Thursday, the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office said in a release provided to Dateline.
“I would like to thank the family of Carey Mae Parker for having the persistence and drive to keep pushing forward to find answers in the disappearance of their family member,” Sheriff Terry Jones said in a statement. “It was a privilege for the sheriff’s office to be able to work with the family and Adventures with Purpose to come one step closer to bringing closure to this case, which has been needed for many years.”
The sheriff’s office received a call at 5:43 p.m. Thursday, February 4, from a private search and recovery team stating that they had located a vehicle in Lake Tawakoni near the causeway on FM 751, according to the release.
Hunt County Sheriff Terry Jones and investigators from the department responded to the scene where they learned the search and recovery team was using sonar equipment and discovered a vehicle in the lake.
Members of the search and recovery team, Adventures with Purpose, which often investigate cold cases, told investigators they believed the vehicle was similar to the one in the Carey Mae Parker case.

Journalists act as both a deterrent to this kind of criminal conduct and as public-minded investigators, particularly where the rule of law has broken down.
Millions of people disappear every year, according to the International Commission on Missing People, and organized crime is involved in many of these cases. The violence associated with drug trafficking in particular, but also wildlife smuggling, resource theft, human trafficking, and other criminal rackets, plays a key role in many of the disappearances.
At its most sophisticated, organized crime is transnational, highly organized, and often systemic. It features in everyday life, infiltrating systems and groups that are essential to society. Disappearances are often a byproduct of this criminal activity.
As corruption is frequently at play, disappearances may not be investigated thoroughly or even at all. Sometimes national or regional authorities are paid off or are unable to access information because of the power and reach of the criminal groups involved. The same can be said for enforced disappearances in which there is a level of state involvement, and where a person is abducted, secretly imprisoned or killed, and the body hidden by a government, or those acting on its behalf.
This crime can take various forms, from isolated cases to mass disappearances and multiple connected cases over time. There are even those who choose to disappear.
Journalists play an important role, acting as both a deterrent to this kind of criminal conduct and as public-minded investigators, particularly where the state and rule of law have broken down. But there are serious risks, and reporters themselves are not immune to the danger inherent in investigating these types of crimes.

Montana fund established to aid families of missing Indigenous people

The Montana Community Foundation has launched a grant program to aid Indigenous families actively searching for a missing loved one.
The Snowbird Fund, aimed at giving immediate financial aid to those seeking missing people, is in response to Montana's disproportionately high rates of missing Indigenous people and launched on Wednesday to the public.
In Montana, Native Americans make up more than 25% of missing persons cases, despite making up 6.7% of the population. The number of missing Indigenous people is likely higher, as they often go unreported or are misreported as a different race. Native Americans are also nearly four times more likely to be victims of homicide than the state's general population.
The fund will go to support people who are actively leading a community search for a missing person by providing a $500 payment for expenses like gas, hotels and meals, cell phone payments, equipment like metal detectors or drones, awareness campaigns and hosting vigils.
Requests for assistance will be reviewed by a fund committee. A decision will be made and payment for approved requests will be made within two weeks.

ICRC signs a Memorandum of Understanding with the Governmental Commission of Missing Persons of Kosovo

Pristina (ICRC) – As part of its efforts to help shed light on the fate and whereabouts of the missing persons in Kosovo, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) mission in Kosovo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Governmental Commission of Missing Persons (GCMP) of Kosovo today.
The MoU is meant to serve as a guide and groundwork for the coordination and cooperation between the ICRC and GCMP in the course of actions aimed at clarifying the fate and whereabouts of those still missing in relation to the 1998--1999 armed conflict in Kosovo.
The head of the ICRC mission in Kosovo, Mr Agim Gashi, said, "At its core, this MoU is a step towards boosting the joint cooperation that the ICRC and GCMP have maintained for years now. The GCMP has shown a very proactive approach to the issue by undertaking concrete efforts to shed light on the fate and whereabouts of those who have gone missing in Kosovo. For the ICRC, the MoU certainly substantiates our unwavering support and commitment to strengthen the local capacities, aiming at a more effective way of dealing with the issue of missing people."
"I want to take this opportunity to again express my appreciation for the cooperation with the GCMP and hope that the MoU will help us all achieve greater results on the ground," Mr Gashi said.
More than 22 years have passed since the armed conflict in Kosovo. The families of more than 1,600 missing people are still waiting for answers about the fate and whereabouts of their loved ones.
As stipulated in the international humanitarian law, the families have a right to know what has happened to their loved ones, and the States are obliged to provide them with answers and support. As always, the ICRC stands ready to support the authorities in fulfilling their responsibilities in this regard and urges them to put the exclusively humanitarian issue of missing people at the forefront.

He is encouraging family members to fill out a “Developmental Disability and Special Needs Emergency Packet.” If that person goes missing, the Sheriff’s Office will be able to immediately disperse pertinent information to deputies. A copy of the plan will also be kept by the family, and it can also be given to anyone who cares for the loved one.

Finding a Dead Body on Google Maps - Super Users

Jerry Nyman works for the School District of Palm Beach County and his job regularly involves using Google Maps to check bus routes. Whilst undertaking a routine search in 2019, Jerry thought he could see a car in one of the man made lakes within a residential community in Florida.
Alongside his ex-girlfriend Erika, Jerry began investigating, and within two days the car was removed from the lake. Jerry was able to help solve a missing persons case that had been active for over 20 years.
We spoke to Jerry and Erika, as they recounted their story.

Oconee County Sheriff's Office, SLED look into possible connection of 4 missing women cases

OCONEE COUNTY, S.C. - The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has requested that SLED's Behavioral Analysis Unit investigate four missing person cases in the county and see if there are any links or similarities between them.
"With SLED coming in that is basically another set of eyes that can take a look at these cases and further assist us," said Oconee County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Jimmy Watt. "Ultimately what we want is to be able to tell the family and friends of these missing ladies 'here's what we believe happened."
This comes after one of the four missing women was found dead early Saturday morning near Rufus Land Road in Westminster. The Oconee County Coroner's Office says that Renee King's body was found in an advanced state of decomposition, and she likely died Nov. 28, 2020.
King is the latest in a string of unsolved missing women cases, one of the four being investigated by SLED.
The other three are Laura Anders, Pamela Roach, and Tammy Stubblefield, who all went missing back in 2019 and have not yet been found.

Deputies use thermal imaging drone to rescue 78-year-old man from embankment

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. — Alexander County Sheriff’s Office used a thermal imaging drone to rescue a missing 78-year-old man from down an embankment in the Stony Point community Wednesday evening.
Deputies were called to a residence located off of Beam Lane in reference to a missing person just before 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Deputies arrived at the residence and family members reported that a 78-year-old man had left the residence alone on a side by side ATV around 4:30 PM and had not returned home.
A search effort was coordinated by local first responders to begin looking for the missing 78-year-old due to temperatures in the 30’s and the rains at the time, as well as the missing person’s age and medical problems, Alexander County Sheriff’s said.
Alexander County EMS, Alexander County Rescue Squad, Stony Point Fire Department, Alexander County Emergency Management, along with Alexander County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search. A K-9 from Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was on standby for the search.
