Josh Hawley made his choice and cast his lot. He deserves his fall from grace.

Opinion by Kathleen Parker

When Josh Hawley ran for Missouri attorney general in 2016, he had almost no name recognition and knew little about the world of conservative politics he was about to enter.

A polished and impeccably trained lawyer, he proved to be a quick study. But somewhere along the way to becoming a U.S. senator in 2019 and making a national name for himself, Hawley made a fateful turn: He decided to become Donald Trump 2.0 — a demagogue who cries victimhood when opposed, who lies about the law, and who exaggerates his accomplishments for political gain.

“He’s a tragedy,” said one of his disappointed early admirers. “But I can’t feel sorry for him because he knows better.”

Does he? The familiar, viral photo of the junior senator raising his fist to protesters at the U.S. Capitol like an undaunted gladiator was both ridiculous and frightening. Hawley then went inside the Senate and pushed to have election results overturned. Not even then-Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) — and 90-odd other senators — could go along with that foolishness.

It was a remarkably fast fall from grace: In a matter of just a few hours, a bright and promising star saw his fortunes completely fade. Members of both parties stopped working with him. Money from big donors dried up in a day or so. An up-and-comer once viewed by many conservatives as presidential material in 2024 traded integrity for the favors of a populist mob.

he seems to think he is god's gift to mankind. Instead, he is a crass disappointment, and a pathetic human being. As a Missourian, we would love to see this guy out on the streets, since he seems to be more interested in himself than his fellow Missourians. A disappointment especially coming from the younger generation to finally step up and replace the aging population of older politicians. I'm eagerly looking for a Missourian replacement for hawley. We all are.

moderate republican would be welcome. Unlikely a Democrat can get elected to replace him. I have read articles about people who knew him when he was young say this isn’t the same person they knew in HS or early years in college.

Missouri has been known for its moderate republicans but hawley is a loud mouthed jerk full of himself...I suspect that it has something to having money in the family already or just being arrogant and spoiled and being trump's little patsy boy. I'm surprised that he's still in MO...I suspect that he'll move somewhere else so he can continue to dwell deeper and deeper in the political process that he wants to muck around with and become president.

he would move to another state. He is having a house built in the Ozarks, so don’t think he’s going anywhere. I think he uses a sister or father’s address as his residency address. I think that should be disqualifying as your residential address.
