Opinion: Here's where it gets interesting on Trump's taxes
Few things are certain in life, other than death -- and that Donald Trump's tax returns would inevitably be released.
On Monday, the Supreme Court finally ended the long legal saga over them with a one-sentence order that will allow Manhattan prosecutors to obtain Trump's returns and related documents from the Trump Organization. These had been subpoenaed back in 2019; Trump's lawsuit to conceal them always seemed more about delay than meritorious legal issues.
This information will likely be in the hands of Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance and his team for their grand jury investigation within the next few days.
And now things will get interesting. While Trump's lawyers have repeatedly tried to characterize the DA's probe as being just about hush-money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal in the lead-up to the 2016 election, Vance's office has long maintained that it is investigating much more than that.
Manhattan investigators are likely focused on bank loans, insurance applications and other kinds of financial transactions related to Trump-owned properties to determine whether he or his companies violated any state laws. They are reportedly looking at the conduct of the former president, as well as the Trump Organization and certain of its other top executives.

(15,751 posts)Long thought that if broadly credible evidence of 'traitor trump' could be brought to bear, that trump would sell out the US for putin bribes, etc. - that would be enough to knock his poll numbers seriously, and jail him.

But I don't know how this will play out with the law.

(2,146 posts)this is just the beginning of exposing Don's corruption. His lies on his taxes will lead to more inquiries which will lead to more corruption. And the longer it takes the more People Don's corruption will expose.

(9,999 posts)Will he see even one day in jail - I have my doubts. Fines and penalties - yes. He is one slippery SOB and I wonder if anyone that counts has the stomach or the balls to sentence a former President to a jail sentence. I so hope that I am wrong.

(11,562 posts)I read about millions of pages of documents. Perhaps they have some shortcuts available. Something along the lines of making an airtight case around enough of the documents to put any and all of them away, then go through the rest and add charges later.
The sooner that MF is dragged through court and then tossed in prison, the better. The biggest regret I have going forward, by FAR, is that even prison is going to be better than he deserves. He'll probably have to take up tennis to replace golf, but I don't see him doing that. Not playing tennis and surviving it, anyway.
Even the menu will be too good for him. A cut above fast food, I'm sure.

(487 posts)Trumps taxes will show loans with signatures from a Russian oligarch. This was news on the Laurence Odonnell show a couple of years ago and was sort of retracted by the next morning. i say sort of because he didn't say it wasn't true he just said he couldn't back it up with a second source. Since then it helped make sense why Trump won't let them see the light of day and as i have read before why he spends a great amount of his resources keeping them hidden. It also eases the mind when you think of why Russia? all the connections and back channels and secret meetings with Putin etc etc.
