One of the year’s marquee events on the GOP calendar, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) was held at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend. Speakers included high-profile Republicans including former President Donald Trump, who repeated false claims that he won the 2020 election.

Early on in the four-day event, outrage erupted over the event’s stage design, which drew comparisons to a Norse rune used by Nazis during World War II. A photo of the CPAC stage went viral as thousands of social media users shared posts comparing its distinctive design to an othala rune.

Following World War II, the symbol was adopted by Nazis in an “attempt to reconstruct a mythic ‘Aryan’ past,’” according to the Anti-Defamation League. “Today, it is commonly seen in tattoo form, on flags or banners, as part of group logos, and elsewhere.”

By Saturday afternoon, there had been nearly 100,000 tweets comparing the CPAC stage to the Nazi symbol, as the #boycottHYATT hashtag exploded across Twitter and other platforms.

Who built the stage? Who provided the design? It’s really time to out the name of the person(s) doing this. My guess is Stephen Miller because no one in the Trump family knows any history or would be smart enough to design this stage. Whoever is doing it needs to have a public spotlight on the connections to white supremacy because not all Republicans would go that far. Nor would many independents who lean Republican.

10. I've been involved in a lot of seminars & trade shows at hotels...

...& convention centers & every hotel I worked with had at least an event manager (usually a team) that reviewed all plans & designs so I'm certain someone from Hyatt reviewed the plans. Many times this review is mandated by the hotel because their liability insurance places restrictions on them like maximum heights of stages, no open flames, etc.

One of the most extreme examples I ever saw was all the conditions that had to be met to get a bunch of cars (show cars) into a hotel ballroom. A root canal is easier.

There's no functional reason for that part of the stage to be a different color from the blue around it. There's no decorative reason because people sitting in the hall wouldn't see it and it wouldn't show in videos focused on the speakers. The GQP is openly working towards a dictatorial form of government and they have the support of 81 million people. They are actively working to allow state governments to ignore the vote of their people and install presidents and senators on their own. They advocate for gerrymandering and voter suppression. The comparisons were “outrageous and slanderous”, Matt Schlapp, chair of the American Conservative Union, said on Saturday. He added the organization had a “long standing commitment to the Jewish community” and that the conference featured several Jewish speakers
