The mental, emotional, and physical toll of COVID-19 is substantially magnified in jails and prisons – yet the suffering is hidden in plain sight. Our Restoring Promise initiative asked people who are incarcerated to share their stories through their art.

Incarcerated people and correctional staff know that COVID-19 is a major threat to their health and safety. Anxiety, fear, and stress escalate as lockdowns limit human interaction and the ability to stay active and see family and loved ones are restricted.

The art they have shared calls on us to recognize the humanity, hardships, and hopes of those experiencing the pandemic in incarceration – adding transparency to life hidden behind walls. Their art tells their stories
