The look in Derek Chauvin's eyes was something worse than hate
Analysis by John Blake, CNN
Updated 4:03 AM ET, Sat April 24, 2021

(CNN) Images and soundbites from the Derek Chauvin trial will linger in people's memories for years. But there is one heart-wrenching image that stands above the rest.

It was the look of indifference in Chauvin's eyes on May 25, 2020, as he casually drained the life out of George Floyd. That was as chilling as his knee on Floyd's neck. And what it represents could pose the biggest challenge to broader police reforms ahead.

That look was freeze-framed in what the prosecution dryly called "Exhibit 17." It shows Chauvin, the White Minneapolis police officer who was found guilty on all three counts in Floyd's death, glancing at a crowd of onlookers while bearing down on an unconscious Floyd, who is handcuffed and pinned face-first to the pavement.

The look on Chauvin's face is one of bored disinterest. His sunglasses are perched on his head and his hands rest in his pocket. He doesn't seem to notice Floyd at all. The only flicker of emotion on his face is his annoyance at the crowd that has gathered to plead for Floyd's life.

I believe he was using that hand to push down on his thigh to increase the pressure on Floyd's neck.

a newspaper (I believe USA Today) lightened the photograph to see that his hand is indeed outside his pocket and it may be to do what you cite in your post.

Note to the writer of this article: there's a difference between disinterest and uninterest.

of a similar color to his pants. Hence, it appeared as if his hand disappeared into his pocket because the gloves blended in with his pants.

The maximum possible static pressure would be equivalent to chauvin’s full weight delivered through one foot only. He would have to balance only on that foot with the other off the ground.

Since both feet were in use, a portion of his weight was dedicated to maintaining balance. Exactly how much is not known. I bet his hand was there to help balance his weight and to maintain stability.

Or he could have just wanted to look casual in the face of the growing crowd. Who knows...

I’m sure any physics experts can tell me I’m wrong.

Regardless, he’s an ass, guilty, and deserved to suffer the consequences.

Those are the eyes of a true psychopath imo. Complete and utter lack of empathy for other human beings, no remorse whatsoever. Only a person with no semblance of a conscience could look like that while in the process of slowly and methodically murdering someone.

I'd bet any amount of money that this isn't the first time he's done something like this. He's 45 years old with almost 20 years of experience working in a job where he literally had the power of life and death over people, and we know for a fact there were numerous complaints against him. There's no telling how many people he's killed just because he felt like it. He might have had many more years of the same to look forward to, if not for a teenager with a cellphone video camera.

I hope he gets the maximum sentence possible.

And I hope the judge has a look of bored indifference as it is given to Chauvin.
