For reasons that are unfathomable to us, the right-wing Daily Caller is giving away to readers one gun per week until Election Day. The gun, a high-capacity 9mm FMK9C1 engraved with the Bill of Rights, is made by Jim Pontillo, who has attacked American liberals for "trying to tear all down to one 'equal' or 'fair' level (that) promotes communism," called the separation of Church and State "a perversion of the 1st Amendment," and incessantly cited "our American Founders' dream of creating a country free from government tyranny...insuring to all citizens those inalienable rights guaranteed to mankind by God" - foremost among them, firearm ownership. Except, actually, not. In a moving, terrifying, instructive piece, The New Yorker's Jill Lepore explores the proliferation of guns in this country and the surprisingly recent evolution of the Second Amendment, which it turns out doesn't say or mean any of the things these trigger-happy wingnuts keep insisting it does.
