Ex-congresswoman Morella (R-MD) '' ... There’s no big tent, not even a small tent. It collapsed.”
Former Republican Congresswoman Blasts Modern GOP, Laments Partys Approach To Womens Issues
Over her eight terms as a Congresswoman from Marylands Eight District, Connie Morella earned a reputation one of the strongest voices for womens rights and reproductive choice in the Republican Party. A bipartisan-minded moderate, she worked with members of both parties to shepherd the 2000 re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act through the House with a 415 to 3 majority. Like former Sen. John Danforth (R-MO), she hardly recognizes her party today.
In an interview with ThinkProgress, Morella expressed disappointment with the anti-women voting record of the 24-member Republican Womens Policy Committee and the lack of bipartisan House support for the Senate version of the Violence Against Women Act.

(25,771 posts)I met her while she was politicking one cold morning at the Shady Grove stop of the Washington Metro while I was on my way to work downtown. I told her that I while I admired her personally - she had been a teacher (English I think) at Montgomery County Community College as I recall, I did not understand why she would continue to be a Republican when it was obvious that the Republicans were becoming more and more negative daily and venal to boot. The image that she tried to portray in Montgomery County was almost a Democrat, but she helped keep Gingrich in power by continuing to fly the Rebublican banner.
All she could do was to blather the tired old mantra that the Republicans were the party of Lincoln. I told her that was BS and that the current (then) Republican Revolution was Lincoln turning in his grave.
