Republicans trapped in a media prison of their own making

The GOP's media echo chamber has become a prison cell the party can't break out of.

California's recall election this past week made that clear, as Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) held onto his office in a landslide, 64 percent to 36 percent.

His margin of victory was hardly a foregone conclusion, even in this heavily blue state. Polls early in the summer showed an almost 50-50 split among likely recall voters. The pandemic, homelessness, years of drought and record wildfires left people weary. Democrats were not motivated to cast ballots.

But then along came candidate Larry Elder, a typically no-holds-barred right-wing talk radio host. Elder checked all the MAGA boxes for the Republican base: He idolized Trump and vilified mask mandates, vaccine mandates, environmental regulation, family leave and the minimum wage.

At most he says it's unfortunate the turn they've taken. Unfortunate was the same word he used about the 1/6/21 insurrection.

for opening that box that is leading to them continuing to suffer election defeat after defeat after defeat...

When will they ever learn? I doubt that they will anytime soon, as their party has been hijacked by these paranoid freaks, and they'll be never able to close Pandora's box again.

Until they do so, they won't be considered a serious nationwide threat since they only comprise roughly 30% of the population. Sure, they might gain inroads in some areas, but after rump and his idiotic antics about not leaving office peacefully when he lost the last election cycle, I think rump turned off a heck of a lot of people when he threatened to ignore Constitutional Law and remain in office under some made up excuse.
