There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.

At that time, he took what was back then the more predominant mass media, (the movies,) and took them to task for their denigration of intellectuals or intelligence.
All we need do is look at the 50's Presidential elections.
"We like Ike" vs that "egghead."
And the mass media was little help, if at all.
Scientists were either "mad," (crazy) or "absent minded."
Today?
Today we have the "Cult of Stupidity."
Trump is still just about deified.
Absolute kooks like MTG, Boebert, Alex Jones and Mark Levin have millions of followers, still.
