Russia-Ukraine crisis: Why Brussels fears Europe is 'closest to war' in decades

"Europe is now closer to war than it has been since the break up of former Yugoslavia."

Stark words of warning from the senior EU diplomat I've just been speaking to off the record about current tensions with Moscow, over its huge military build-up on the border with Ukraine.

The mood in Brussels is jumpy. There's a real fear that Europe could be spiralling towards its worst security crisis in decades.

But angst isn't wholly focused on the prospect of a long, drawn-out ground war with Russia over Ukraine.

Few here believe Moscow has the military might, never mind the money, or popular support back home for that.

"military might, never mind the money, or popular support back home"? That has never stopped him before. He doesn't care about what people think as long as he gets his way.

pending exposure in the US and possibly the UK as the instigator and lead financier behind Trump and Johnson's actions to disable and dismantle the western alliance. You won't hear about in the American MSM because most of them bought the lie that the Mueller investigation went nowhere near to proving the Russian connect to Trump.

The DOJ reveal of Trump and GOP finances should make very interesting reading.

But can’t wait another 3 years to find out if he can cheat again.

so why the hell is the west pushing for war?

...and be there no mistake. The west started the coup in the Ukraine and continues to do so.

Had enough of my family die from neocons and other warmonger parties. What I said was not an opinion, but fact, and in no way in support of Putin.
I was there in the Ukraine. Russia has the economy of New Jersey, and the Ukraine, about the land size of California, an economy of some mid-western state, and at one time, had a majority of the USSR's nuclear arsenal on the west and was part of Russia for a hundred years, is worthy of playing with nuclear war? Really?

Seriously, being anti-war is somehow pro-putin now?
