Is this the beginning of the end for Trumpism or the Republican Party?
It was a Republican National Committee meeting that will live in infamy, and perhaps in history. The RNCs decision Friday to rebrand deadly mob violence at the U.S. Capitol as legitimate political discourse and censure two GOP House members investigating the attack has exposed a party so divided against itself that, as Abraham Lincoln told his fellow Republicans in 1858, it cannot stand.
Back then he presented the existential choice as preserving slavery or preserving the Union. Today, the choice is between preserving Trumpism or preserving the Republican Party.
There is increasing evidence that they cannot co-exist. The resolution adopted by the RNC in Salt Lake City has unleashed a torrent of protest from Republicans and former Republicans including, as of Tuesday, sharp comments from Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell.
They want to move on from lies, from 2020, from Donald Trump.

(6,228 posts)I have thought that the repubs were in deep trouble, but it never happened. As long as they have enough voters to keep them winning elections it's not over.

(22,794 posts)Let's focus on developments regarding the evidence, indictment, and punishment of the Jan 6 conspirators, and get out the vote efforts. Every time someone predicts the GOP is dead, it one again rears its ugly head like one of those slasher movies where the killer looks like he or she is dead, and then they open their eyes and resume their rampage. We are just going to have to accept the fact that a lot of Americans have an authoritarian, or even fascist bent ... and always have.

People have been sold the myth that America is the land of boundless opportunity, boundless wealth, and that the streets are paved with gold.
Some will react to that with . . . ok, how do I make that happen?
And just get on with that difficult job.
Others will assume it will just happen, and sit back.
They end up at the bottom of the job pile and life wise.
And feel victimized because the promised Good Life didn't happen for them.
Something went wrong, but they can't quite identify what.
And it's that last group that will look for others to blame, and turn to predatory behavior to get what they think they deserve any way they can.
They want a leader who is strong and give them what they want, to validate their feeling of hard done by, so they see authoritarianism as a good thing, especially if they are given other groups to feel superior to.
TFG appealed to them, but it was a delusion. Most of the Republican party is still stuck in that way of thinking . . . we deserve things, who is blocking our 'needs'?
