He miscalculated badly on the effectiveness of his army, both logistics and training wise and now that a stalemate of sorts has been reached, there's no face saving off ramp to end the war without him looking like zip damn fool who never should've invaded.

It's endgame for him whether he uses nukes or not as he has to know overthrowing him is being considered in influential circles in Russia.
