(10,708 posts)Any problem with the food supply falls on us for letting the oligarchs that control food production do what they have done in the past several decades. They will not spend money on sensible preparations for such a thing. They would rather run it into the ground, make as much as they can, and then just leave the ruins and move to another country. Wash, rinse, repeat. Healthcare and food production are things that should not be solely for-profit. And, we are paying the price for it every day. It will only get worse. (991 posts)Only one variety of banana is left.
Pesticides, gmos, etc, are also contributing factors. At the end of the day, big agriculture/ corporate profit driven profit is at the core of these issues.
There is some hope seeing farmers in Mexico bringing back many varieties of corn.
Farmers in the US are arrested for even having Monsanto seeds they didnt buy, growing on their fields brought in by the wind.
Corporations could still make profits, they would need to slow down their greed train and plan for the future more intelligently, with the care of the planet and its flora and fauna in its consciousness, not just their trash and burn mentality.
But what do I know.

Never even heard of apple bananas. I bet they are quite good.
I dont think I have eaten anything but grocery store bananas. I probably dont know what a really good banana even tastes like.
