White Evangelicals, This is Why People Are Through With You

Dear White Evangelicals,

I need to tell you something: People have had it with you.

They’re done.

They want nothing to do with you any longer, and here’s why:

They see your hypocrisy, your inconsistency, your incredibly selective mercy, and your thinly veiled supremacy.

For eight years they watched you relentlessly demonize a black President; a man faithfully married for 26 years; a doting father and husband without a hint of moral scandal or the slightest whiff of infidelity.

They watched you deny his personal faith convictions, argue his birthplace, and assail his character—all without cause or evidence. They saw you brandish Scriptures to malign him and use the laziest of racial stereotypes in criticizing him.

My in-laws are two of those people. Deacons in their church, choir members, hate Carter/love TFG.

My wife, who loves her parents but doesn't get it sometimes, wanted to buy one of Carter's books for her dad for xmas. I said don't, it won't go over well. She asked why not. I said, the old man watches fox news and will hate Carter.

She got him a different book but mentioned the Carter book - he was not quite seething in his comment. I sat quietly.

and I realized it was all play acting, that nobody really believed any of it or they'd act one hell of a lot better than they did.

It's not just white folks in megachurches true believer Catholics are at least as bad and sometimes worse, if only by familiarity when I was growing up. We know about Islamist and rabid Hindu assholes. May the lot of them find the hells they try to create for us.

I'm glad Millennials and Zoomers are taking a harder look at them than late Boomers and Gen X did, but I suppose Millennial Fever had something to do with that. The fever broke a long time ago, but some people just can't give up their entertainment every Sunday.

So I hope people really are done and don't get sucked back in when they have kids. Or if they do, they pick an old standard instead of a glitzy showbiz venue run by a guy with a pompadour.

I won't be here to see it, but I hope this current religious fervor spilling over and creating toxic politics is over soon, the architectural white elephants turned into concert venues where old rappers wheeze their way onto the stages the way old rockers do now.

Oh, there is something in a lot of people that seems to need a religion. I just think we can do better. We have to do better.

I know a few die hard fundy believers. When put on the spot, they suddenly forget the teachings of their Jesus. They always find a convenient "out".

I read somewhere that their numbers have declined in the last few years. Let's hope that trend continues.

until about 2080, then there will be a centennial boomlet and pompadoured charlatans with capped teeth will once again experience lavishly positive cash flow. I don't know why numbers on an arbitrary calendar spook superstitious people, but they do.

There is no real discussion with them, either, unless you're their particular pompadoured fraud. Change the subject, walk away and if they tell you you're going to hell, do what I do, grab their hands and give them a two fisted Chamber of Commerce hearty handshake while saying :I heard god was dead but I hadn't realized you'd gotten his job. Congratulations!" I guarantee the harangue will end and the subject never broached again.

Most of them believed the extermination of Native Americans was justified by "Manifest Destiny," and the United States was destined by God to expand its dominion across the entire continent. Many southern christians believed that slavery was "an institution of God," using bible verses to sanctify the practice.

It's obvious America's conservative christian universities should teach their students CRT (Critical Religious Theory). It might open their eyes to the horrors perpetrated by their own churches. But, that would be too "woke" for them.

That they are destroying Christianity. Church attendance is dropping like a rock.
In 2019, 34% of Americans attended a religious service at least once or twice a month. In 2020 31%. In 2021 28%.
You might want to open your eyes and accept that Americans do not like what you are selling. Your perversion of Christ's teachings is not being accepted and is moving quickly into history.

A divorce, and moving out of my bubble of a UCC church (Obama's denomination) to a small town helped, but hearing about "faith not fear" for two years while working at a nursing home and seeing the effects showed me the door.

My only regret is it's 50 miles to the closest Zen temple.
