Joe Manchin blocked climate spending so the national debt won't crush his grandkids.

His legacy risks handing them much bigger problems.

Last week, Sen. Joe Manchin efficiently killed off part of Democrats' agenda — a move he's pulled before as one of the two key centrist votes upholding Democrats' razor-thin majority.

This time, Democrats saw tax hikes on the wealthy and spending on climate measures slip away for the second time in less than a year. It's fueling anger among activists pressing for aggressive action to confront the climate emergency.

"Senator Manchin, for close to two years now, has been wavering the fate of human survival and the safety of our communities over our heads, like a bone to starving dogs," John Paul Mejia, the national spokesperson for climate activist group the Sunrise Movement, told Insider. "Frankly, the latest attempt to gut any climate spending from a once in a generation reconciliation bill is part of the same strategy that he's always been playing with."

Manchin's resistance has a lot to do with high inflation numbers, something he's been particularly focused on as negotiations drag on. He's now "cautious" about any potential spending that could drive prices higher. Instead, he wants to focus on slashing the cost of prescription drugs and renewing an expiring financial assistance program under the Affordable Care Act.

But he's willing to poison my grandkids with dirty water, dirty air, and wildfires...so his rich little snowflakes don't have to pay the national debt...as if? Like grandpa Joe they'll find all the tax loopholes too!!!

Not to worry...the "good" people of West Virginia who seem to get their jollies by putting a thumb in the eye of the D.C. elite...will continue to support Maserati Joe as they die with the rest of the planet!!!

Is as old as it is nonesensical.

I grew up in Chicago, and we got the Tribune. Damn near every issue I recall had an editorial cartoon depicting grotesque Federal spending piling a crushing burden of economic calamity on the future. This, mind, was well over a half century ago.

It has not materialized, it will not materialize, I doubt even the Tribune really thought it ever would. It is not and never has been anything but an excuse to hobble any attempt by our government to assist any but rentiers and bond-holders.

attempting to reduce them. National debt and inflation are NOTHING compared to the future costs/economic losses of climate change.

what's best for everyone. Why don't you be a gentleman and actually listen to the good folks advocating why something more aggressive should be done on climate change. One question you should be asking yourself (and I know you won't) is why now, why should something be done now? Thousands of scientists, far better experts than you (or I) have harped to all of us of the serious issues confronting our climate worldwide, and the issues that it is causing, more higher tides, more storms (more destructive too), and we've just touched the tip of the iceberg (ironically, icebergs won't be around much longer either).
