Opinion: In Cheney's loss, Biden has an opportunity

(CNN)With Tuesday's defeat of Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney of Wyoming, some might argue that former President Donald Trump's hostile takeover of the GOP is now nearly complete. And they might be right. But Liz Cheney made it clear in her barn burner of a concession speech that she is not planning to ride off quietly into the sunset; rather, she plans to "do whatever it takes to ensure that Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office, and I mean it."

No longer chained to a party whose leaders have abandoned its core values and principles, Cheney is now poised to become the Obi-Wan Kenobi of American politics. Like Kenobi's famous line in "Star Wars," "If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine," uttered moments before he's killed by Darth Vader, the same can now also be said about Cheney.

But with her rejection from Republican voters in Wyoming comes an unparalleled opportunity for President Joe Biden and the Democrats, and one they should not squander.

As a conservative with a dynastic last name who, in this hyper-partisan climate, wields uncommon and genuine respect on both sides of the aisle, Cheney would be a valuable addition to the Biden administration. The President should appoint her as a cabinet-level czar on election integrity and the preservation of democracy once her term is up in January. Creating this post would allow her to continue the work she so adroitly began as the co-chair of the January 6th Committee and empower her to fight against the violent and pseudo-autocratic undercurrents that have seeped into conservative politics and pose a real existential threat to our democracy."

Hmmm.

Is this what's coming down the road?

Thoughts?

Has finally gotten a shovel and started digging. Just a matter of time until the fall.

Cheney will probably find a niche somewhere in the RNC and tear open some fresh wounds

Cheney is not our friend nor does she give a fuck about election integrity. She voted against voting rights. She’s as heartless and cruel as any other Republican. She’s simply not a traitor, that’s it. That’s the extent of her “good will”, the very lowest bar an elected official has to clear.

It’s like everyone has forgotten who she is.

We would not get one more single vote for Biden/Harris in 2024 if he did that. He would only be giving a stinky GOP an in to the WH.

No...It's not really Manchin - it's just the Democrats' own unrealistic expectations and faulty national strategy.... That description is not a quotation, but that is the spirit of the piece.

Election Central

Wierson and Honan: The Democratic Party is drunk on spiked progressive Kool-Aid
by Opinion by Arick Wierson and Bradley Honan [sic?]
June 11, 2021

West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin has emerged as the progressives’ new favorite politician to attack. Their frustrations with Manchin are largely fueled by his refusal to both support the For the People Act, a comprehensive voting rights and campaign finance reform bill, and to kill the filibuster, which threatens to undermine President Joe Biden’s efforts to pass any significant legislation.

But their ire is misplaced.

Manchin is a unique political leader whose mere existence in a deep red state defies conventional political logic. In the last presidential election cycle, former President Donald Trump carried West Virginia by almost 40 points. But Manchin understands the politics of his state well. As a US Senate candidate, he — not once, but twice — filmed campaign ads in which he shot a long gun at bills he didn’t think were good for West Virginia, while boasting of his backing from the NRA.

In short, the problem isn’t Manchin. It’s a Democratic Party that is drunk off its own progressive-spiked Kool-Aid, incapable of driving home safely in a world upended after Donald Trump’s presidency.

Why care what they have to say?

More importantly, Cheney is not an ally. She is a Republican who should not be embraced, validated or otherwise rewarded with anything resembling political power.

Show me where Liz thought voter ID was nonsense, that motor-voter was a good idea, where drop boxes were not a danger, on the safety of election workers against the rabid observers on the Reich intimidating those workers, on Gerrymandering, on re-districting, on a Census free from the many blocks by - REPUBLICANS!

Do that first. And then, still NO!

billionaires pay at least some taxes.

No.

If she wants to accomplish her concession speech aims, the first thing she needs to do is get back into the house race as an independent or even a write-in, and give the Democrat a chance to draw close. Or, instead of playing the partisan game, endorse the Democratic candidate, Lynette Grey Bull, and help her raise money.
