Editorial: She desecrated a synagogue and was charged with a misdemeanor. Then she came back.

My temple was desecrated by a Messianic Jew or Jew for Jesus nut case. This editorial is in today's Houston Chronical. This lady should have been charged initially with a felony and should have never been able to bond out a second time.

https://www.houstonchronicle.com/opinion/editorials/article/emanu-el-congregation-ezra-law-antisemitism-17734330.php

The disturbing series of events which led her back to the synagogue raises further questions about whether law enforcement is adequately aware of and prepared for increasingly prevalent anti-Jewish threats. A survey released this month by the Anti-Defamation League found that antisemitic beliefs have intensified across the country.

“With the increase in antisemitism over the last few years, every time that there’s a threat to a Jewish institution, it dramatically increases anxiety,” Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League Mark Toubin told the editorial board.

Law was originally charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief for the Jan. 14 break-in, despite the fact that the state penal code classifies “damage or destruction inflicted on a place of worship” as a felony offense. By the time prosecutors upgraded the initial misdemeanor to the more appropriate felony charge, Law had already been freed on a $100 bond handed down by a magistrate, who denied the DA’s request to fit her with an ankle monitor.

After Law skipped out on her arraignment hearing Friday, and was arrested Saturday afternoon at the synagogue, the DA this time asked for a $10,000 bond with GPS monitoring and an explicit curfew. Instead, Magistrate Judge Jannell Robles granted a $5,000 personal bond with neither of those conditions. By Sunday morning, Law had again bailed out of jail, to the shock of many community members following the case.

An Instagram post on Law's account followed shortly after, in which she proclaimed she is a Messianic Jew, a controversial sect generally not considered members of the Jewish faith. They consider the conversion of Jews to messianic Judaism a central part of their mission.....

Finally, in a court hearing on Monday, a visiting felony court judge revoked Law's bail, pending a hearing, and ordered a psychological evaluation. But her threatening and harassing posts and erratic behavior have put Houston's Jewish community on edge, questioning, as many of us are, why a woman who trespassed at a house of worship and desecrated a sacred text was not immediately charged with the appropriate offense. And why, given a chance to right that initial wrong, a steward of our justice system instead allowed a woman who had violated her bond conditions and was very likely a public safety risk to walk free on a low bond.

I will never understand why she was allowed to bail out a second time. That is very poor judgement.

That is the philosophy of way too many when it comes to Jews, and, actually, a few other groups of minorities.

January 26, 2023

Dear Emanu El Family,

We are writing to share an update concerning the ongoing events in our community relating to Ezra Law.

The hearing in the criminal proceedings filed against Law previously set for Friday, January 27 has been moved to Monday, January 30 at 9:00 a.m. Law is still in custody where she will remain until Monday’s hearing.

The case is pending in the 232nd Criminal District Court of Harris County. Monday’s court proceeding is open to the public. You may attend in person or virtually as an observer. Please do not contact the court or Judge concerning the proceedings as that could negatively impact that case.

The court’s address is:
232nd Criminal District Court
16th Floor
Criminal Justice Center
1201 Franklin
Houston, Texas 77002

To listen to the hearing virtually, use this link: https://video.ibm.com/channel/UwDDtbmLYkZ.

In addition, yesterday’s update referenced Law’s second entry into our building as having occurred on January 21. The correct date is January 20.

We are actively monitoring the situation and will continue to provide timely updates.

6. Here is a report on the hearing today

This lady will be out on bond but will be monitored

January 31, 2023

We are writing today to share another update on the current situation.
A hearing for Ezra Law did proceed today as scheduled and as mentioned in yesterday’s message to the community. As a result of that hearing, bond was set at $10,000 with conditions that include 24-hour ankle monitoring, house arrest, 24-hour curfew, compliance with treatment recommendations, no contact with Congregation Emanu El to include social media mentions or tagging, and no contact with minors. At this time we don’t know if bond will actually be posted, but given the seriousness of the situation we are operating on the assumption that it could be.

We are treating this development with the gravity it deserves. We are notifying all staff and our community at large, along with both Houston and Rice University’s police departments. In addition, we are making certain existing security protocols are reinforced and activating more safeguards, including off-duty police officers present on campus.

Security Protocols include:
• Full time guards at our perimeter
• Full time guards at all authorized building entrances
• 24/7 on-campus security
• Enhanced security for large events
• Supplemental HPD and sub-station patrols on our campus
• Enhanced campus entry protocols
• Reduced access points
• 2-Step verification process for entry
• Hall Pass verification implemented for all vendors, service and delivery people
• Additional off-duty police officer present on campus if Ezra Law posts bond

As always, we’re here to talk. Please feel welcome to reach out to Stuart Gaylor at stuart.gaylor3@gmail.com.

7. Update on the lady who broke into my Temple

I just got this email

March 21, 2023
Dear Congregation Emanu El and Becker School Families,
We have learned today that Ezra Law has been moved to a secure inpatient mental health facility. Per court order, there is no option for Law to bond out of the mental health facility, and she will remain under the authority of the Houston Sheriff’s Office while receiving care.
Though we do not believe there is cause for concern, we are sharing this message directly out of an abundance of caution and in keeping with our promise to update the community regarding new developments.
Community safety remains our top priority. All relevant security personnel have been informed, and all enhanced security protocols remain in place.
We encourage you to continue to visit the Emanu El Newsroom for regular updates on subjects like security, the Ezra Law case, our leadership team, and copies of important messages shared through other channels. We also invite you to make use of our info@emanuelhouston.org email address, meant to connect anyone seeking information about the items above, or related subjects, with the right people quickly and easily.
