This Sarah Huckabee Sanders subtext should be very concerning -- for Republicans

The State of the Union response is one of the toughest jobs in politics. Many rising stars have struggled to bridge the gap between two images: the president speaking to a joint session of Congress versus a lone politician talking to the camera or a small audience. Even the most talented politicians have struggled to pretend that the two realities are in any way equally impressive.

It was appropriate, then, that this year’s English-language Republican response was given by Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Arkansas’ new governor has plenty of experience crafting alternate realities for a national audience. In her two years as Donald Trump’s press secretary, up was down, “countless” FBI agents hated former director and Trump foe James Comey and separating immigrant children from their families was “very biblical.” But throughout her speech on Tuesday, Sanders’s affinity for alternative facts just underlined the Republican Party’s long-term problems in appealing outside its own base.

For 15 minutes, Sanders conjured an America that more resembled a dystopian hellscape than a country that added 517,000 new jobs just last month. “Democrats want to rule us with more government control,” Sanders warned. “In the radical left’s America … you get crushed with high gas prices, empty grocery shelves, and our children are taught to hate one another on account of their race.”

“Most Americans simply want to live their lives in freedom and peace, but we are under attack in a left-wing culture war we didn’t start and never wanted to fight,” said the former Fox News commentator. “Every day,” she moaned, “we are told that we must partake in their rituals, salute their flags, and worship their false idols.”

The last paragraph is all projection by the Huckabeast. I don't have gay or transgender people coming by my door trying to sell me their point of view. I can't say the same about right wing Christians.

and all the standard nonsense Trump has been peddling instead of addressing what the gop vision is for America. Of course, they don't have any.

GOP should avoid Sarah Sanders’ ‘normal or crazy’ challenge

“The dividing line in America is no longer between right or left," Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared. "The choice is between normal or crazy.”

snip

...as my MSNBC colleague Ja’han Jones noted last night, there was one line in the GOP governor’s remarks that stood out as especially memorable.

“The dividing line in America is no longer between right or left. The choice is between normal or crazy.”

Sanders may not fully appreciate on which side of that line she and her party fall. Indeed, the Republican’s warning to the public about steering clear of political “craziness” came shortly after Americans saw Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, among other GOP radicals, heckle Biden in ugly ways for telling the truth during the State of the Union address.

It also came against a backdrop in which Republican leaders are threatening to crash the U.S. economy on purpose unless their unspecified demands are met.

Put it this way: In terms of policy positions and weird cultural grievances, there was very little in Sanders’ speech that Democrats could agree with. That said, it’s likely that many Democratic leaders would be quick to endorse the idea that the dividing line in America is no longer between right or left; the choice is between normal or crazy.

“we are told that we must partake in their rituals, salute their flags, and worship their false idols.”

Which party is passing laws and deciding court cases removing the right to bodily autonomy?
Which party is passing laws and deciding court cases to nearly remove all gun restrictions?
Which party is passing laws to make this a "Christian Nation"?
Which party appropriated the US flag as a symbol of their insurrection & planned fascist regime?

The GOP having Huckabee do this was chef's kiss - they couldn't have picked a better person to make them look bad.

Did she even read Biden's speech? It didn't sound like it.

She's a droning, boring speaker, and yes, I know all politicians have their colloquialisms that are not necessarily signs of ignorance. But her blank expressions and sentence structure are annoying.

I would also think the GOP would want someone who can be on the national stage to follow up what turned out to be a heck-uv-a speech by Biden. He manipulated and browbeat the GOP into having to agree with him on two key issues and now, on the record, thinking about reducing social security and medicare. She missed a great chance to take back the narrative on that.

to wear, especially to an event such as this. I'm a sweatpants/t-shirt type, but I am wondering why Sarah Huckabee-Sanders chose to wear a bathrobe for this high velocity occasion. This particular bathrobe looks almost exactly like the one I wore when I went in for a mammogram today.
