North Charleston PD fires school resource officer charged with child sex crime

North Charleston PD fires school resource officer charged with child sex crime

A school resource officer employed by the North Charleston Police Department was arrested Aug. 5 on allegations of sexual misconduct with a minor, prompting city officials to swiftly fire the veteran police officer.

Mount Pleasant police booked David Don Watson Jr. into the Charleston County jail just before 6:30 p.m. on the charge of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

Someone is guilty of the felony if they commit or attempt to commit a lewd act on a child under the age of 16.

Even without stories that make the national news, teachers tend to use them as a substitute for discipline. I don't blame teachers for this, they get too little support.

But the problem is that police officers are trained in dealing with crime, not persuading children to behave in the classroom. So they do what they know how to do. If you follow your local news, you may see stories of a second grader being hauled off by a police officer for the crime of talking in class.
