Biased assumptions leave Black people exasperated
Column: Biased assumptions leave Black people exasperated
ROGER CHESLEY
Please, white America: Just stop it.
Stop trying to put Black people in their place. Stop calling the police when African Americans have the temerity to refuse to show their ID as if you are a law enforcement official. Black Virginians already have to deal with being stopped by actual police more than white people, recent data shows, and are more likely to be searched during such traffic stops. Black folks deal with health disparities, disproportionate access to housing and other serious issues, so stop tattling on Black folks for minor reasons; theyre simply going about their daily routines.
Their lives might be at risk when police arrive. Black people, even children, have been killed when assumptions were wrong or a suspected crime was trivial.
The latest bit of nonsense occurred in Newnan, Ga., near Atlanta. Anthony Gibson was approached by a woman questioning why he was using a residents-only pond in his own neighborhood. The avid fisherman, whos Black, had fielded so many annoying queries that he began posting the encounters on social media. Police were called on him at least once. .............(more)

Situations like these are why the Montgomery brawl was such a celebrated moment. Most people never have to worry about being harassed by the cops while taking out the trash. But one teenage boy had to deal with this, with his father looking right at him. In Lansing, Michigan, a boy was taking the trash out of his apartment, and wound up in handcuffs. Also, at least five cop cars pulled up on him, as his father asked what the boy did wrong.
While the police were harassing the child, people looked on in disbelief. There was one person recording the entire situation and explaining what happened. According to the person recording, the boy barely had time to make it to the dumpster, before the cops confronted him. Even after learning the child lived in the neighborhood, they still put cuffs on him. As a result, the boys father confronted the cops over the situation.
A Lansing, Michigan teenage boy wound up having a terrifying moment. The boy was simply following his fathers instructions. As a result, he was outside takin out the trash. Things like that are supposed to be character building, not life-threatening and humiliating. Instead, the boy was handcuffed in front of his whole neighborhood. Even as his father explained the situation, the boy was escorted to the back of the cop car, as more officers arrived. Thankfully, the boy was let go.

is a deep seated hatred of anyone seen as a threat to their concept of the role of the dominant society, and the exclusive privileges it provides. It appears to be something they are afraid of even admitting.
