Nigeria hit by widespread blackout in 'total system collapse'

Nigeria has been hit by widespread power cuts following a "total system collapse", electricity distribution companies say.

Levels of power being generated fell to zero megawatts early on Thursday.

Some supplies have been restored but only a tiny fraction of normal consumption in Africa's most populous country.

Power supplies are often erratic in Nigeria, despite its role as a major oil and gas producer.

...

President Bola Tinubu, who has been in power for just over 100 days, has promised to improve supply by allowing state governments to build their own power plants.

and his equally pious wife just landed there yesterday to bring the word to the heathens still roaming around. I do not want anything to cause them harm but a little discomfort at their ages might make them rethink these trips. Of course their brood and their broods brood are already covering much of the world. I guess when your brand is the very best you are obligated to force it on others? You cannot tell me there are that many people in this world who do not know who Jesus is with all the coverage he gets.

I'd be worried about any Americans going to Nigeria on their own these days. But if they're part of a larger group, one hopes that the church has enough contacts with the Nigerian government to keep the missionaries safe.

They run a bunch of these things. They usually buy a school for children who have special needs and convert them while someone else teaches them. They have been doing this for years, it is a big group and I do not worry about them. They know the risks and I think they are very smart about it all. They are kind people but I so disagree with this that I pretty much stay away. I would wish nothing bad happens to them but damn...these people have a religion and do not need their kids influenced away from their family and community like this. So....
