Newsom Tells World Leaders to Stand Up to Trump: 'Pathetic'

(Time) California’s Gov. Gavin Newsom issued a strong message to global leaders on Tuesday, urging them to take a stand against President Donald Trump.

“People are rolling over. I should have brought a bunch of kneepads for all the world leaders,” Newsom told reporters at the World Economic Forum in Davos. “It’s just pathetic.”

Newsom made reference to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado regifting her Nobel Peace Prize to Trump during a visit to the White House last week and said the behaviour around the President is “embarrassing.”

The Democratic Governor—who is a long-time adversary of Trump’s—urged European lawmakers to “stop being complicit” and “have a backbone.” Newsom's comments come amid tense international discussions after Trump threatened to tariff European allies until Denmark agrees to sell Greenland to the U.S.

about 2 issues I think HE is not standing up on. The first is the proposed billionaire's tax in Ca. which would close gaps in education, health, and food insecurity that will be left by the BBB. Second is his refusal to recognize Israel's intentional genocide of Palestinians which officials themselves have attested to (w/out using the G word) and which genocide scholars, all humanitarian organizations including two based in Israel, numerous international doctors, respected Jewish historians agree has happened.
His excuse for not being pro wealth tax is that billionaires will leave the state. He vastly underestimates CA's historical and very special attributes. Some contend that his reluctance is rooted in his need for billionaires to finance his run for the presidency. Similarly, he might be loathe to alienate pro-Israel voters he will need in future, a substantial number of the democratic electorate.
Ah, well. Politicians will be politicians.

... know that to Trmp and the people around him, shame is an utterly alien concept which their minds cannot even grasp, except to the extent that they believe anyone who opposes their dictatorial schemes should be shamed -- purely as a practical matter, not out of any but the most temporarily convenient principles.
