Congressional Republicans are split on using taxpayer funds to build Trump's ballroom

(NBC News) WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump’s top allies are pushing for Congress to fund a costly White House ballroom after the president was evacuated from a dinner Saturday in a sprawling hotel ballroom where a gunman breached a security checkpoint.

But Republicans are divided on whether to make taxpayers foot the bill, with some preferring to let Trump raise money privately to construct the 90,000-square foot ballroom. And Democrats remain firmly opposed, meaning it would be a heavy lift for Republicans to pass a bill.

On Monday, a trio of Republicans senators — Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Katie Britt of Alabama and Eric Schmitt of Missouri — announced legislation to provide $400 million to build a new ballroom on the White House grounds.

“America has a problem, and we intend to fix it,” Graham told reporters. “This is not about Trump. It’s about the presidency of the United States. It’s about the person who occupies that office not being put at risk if they choose to go off campus.”

Bait-and-switch. It's a shame that your garden variety Repuglican base MAGAt does not have the intellectual capacity to comprehend that concept.

He was just bs'ing to cover his ass for the moment that he was being questioned about the funding. That was really apparent, if you can find the interview and watch it again, you can see the moment that he thought about a way to cover his ass for the costs after he was asked about who was going to pay for all of that. I say, send him the bills for the destruction and the rebuild.

How does a White House ballroom protect the president when they are off campus? Presidents will no longer go on vacation or hold campaign rallies?

That's what Lindsey says, but building this ugly monstrosity does nothing to solve the security problems once TSF leaves the White House grounds.

Hey, Graham, the "ballroom" would not be off campus and there must be a safe room or more within the White House itself.

Let's not delude ourselves, the ballroom is just another trump trophy to flaunt to the world. We should not have to pay for this farce.
