One Soda A Day Raises Diabetes Risk :ABC News

http://gma.yahoo.com/blogs/abc-blogs/one-soda-per-day-raises-diabetes-risk-study-100043979--abc-news-health.html

There's yet another reason for giving up soda: A new study out today suggests that just one 12 ounce serving of a sugar-sweetened beverage can raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by up to 22 percent.

Since most research on the evils of soda has looked at North American populations, researchers at the Imperial College of London wanted to see if they could establish a link between sugary drink consumption and type 2 diabetes in Europeans too.

To test their theory, the researchers combed through over 15 years of data on sugar-sweetened beverage consumption that included more than 27,000 people from seven European countries. During that time period more than 40 percent developed type 2 diabetes, with those who said they drank at least one soda or some other sweet drink each day showing an 18 percent higher risk of developing the disease. When factors like body weight and body mass index weren't controlled for, the risk rose to 22 percent.

This is consistent with findings from U.S. studies that find that soda drinking is associated with a 25 percent increased diabetes risk.

Notably, even diet soda drinkers had to worry about developing diabetes. However, when body weight and exercise levels were factored in, the link disappeared. In other words, healthy-weight, exercising diet soda drinkers were no more likely to develop type two diabetes than non-soda drinkers.

a 48 ounce soda is 4 - 12ounce cans.

The above story tells the tale of ONE 12 ounce can

a 48 ounce supersize is consumed in one 90 minute movie.

Why do rebels with straws persist in their behavior?

Don't they care?

Waylon Jennings should still be alive today. It was preventable, and treatable.

a coke habit he himself said ran $1500 a day. He also drank alcohol heavily. So avoiding a large soda would have been a drop in his health bucket. He's not a good example for this use to say the least.

5. Waylon died of Diabetes. Not from cancer. Not from liver disease. He could be alive today.

and, he had his leg amputated. For someone like Waylon he did not enjoy that.

But yeah, quitting smoking, drugs and over drinking and fried food also is a good thing too.

Wellness for 2013 instead of excess.

6. Cancer and liver disease are the only things you think come from drugs and smoking?

Waylon died from complications around diabetes not directly from the disease, his body was destroyed by years of abuse. I doubt seriously the man ever drank a soda. So if your habits are like Waylon's do not think that ordering no soda will save your life. Cause it won't.
Of course, I don't drink that shit, but I also don't smoke 6 packs a day nor do ounces of coke each week for decades. And if I did, the soda would be the least of my worries.
Just for your information, Jennings died from complications around diabetes.
Links Between Smoking and Diabetes Complications

Smoking results in increased albuminuria (blood protein in the urine), which leads to nephropathy (kidney damage) and a greater risk of end-stage renal disease that requires dialysis, and is also associated with decreased survival in comparison with dialysis patients who do not smoke.

People with diabetes who smoke are more likely than those who don't smoke to develop retinopathy (damage to the eyes) and neuropathy (damage to the nerves). Neuropathy can lead to an increased risk of injury, particularly to the feet. When a foot injury occurs, its healing can be complicated by the diminished blood flow and oxygenation to the extremities that results from both diabetes and smoking. This can then result in wounds that do not heal, which can lead to infection. In the most severe cases, infections can result in functional loss of the extremity or even amputation.

You can look up the speed and coke yourself

He died from diabetes. That is what this thread is about.

People not Waylon die from diabetes for different reasons than Waylon might have but it is all the same.

I have been trying to kick the habit but I can't quite seem to get there. A 22% increased risk of diabetes should be enough to help motivate me.

9. I used to love Pepsi and drank at least one soda a day and used to get sick all the time

between colds, stomach viruses and feeling run down. I stopped about 5 years ago and my life turned around. I was able to deal with stress better, rarely ever got sick, and no more achy bones. I drink sparking water instead and now I can't even drink a soda occasionally. The last time was in September at an amusement park and afterwards I felt sick. I crashed an hour later and got really tired. I knew then and there no more colas for me.

My boss loves diet coke and just got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer before the diagnosis of cancer he was suffering from type 2 diabetes. I know the two are related. I used to get on his case all the time and gave him articles about diet soda but he ignored me.
