Save Our Cities… Cut the Real Fat! | Philip A. Farruggio

Once we who do not earn more than $1 million a year wake up, real "hope and change" will occur.

Unlike the right-wing rhetoric that has seeped down into that of the so-called progressives, AKA Democrats, the fat is not where the hypocrites say it is. No, the waste is not focused on so called "entitlements" (welfare, food stamps, Obamacare etc). The real waste is to be found in the fact that more than 50 percent of each of our federal taxes goes for military spending.

Before you get up on your high horse and tell me I do not support our troops, the grunts only get less than $50,000 a year of a total cost of over $1 million yearly to keep one of them in places like Afghanistan. Think about that for a minute. Someone in the private sector is making lots of money… your tax money on our military.

Years ago, when the debate would come up as to those welfare queens who rip us off (and many did), this writer would inform his right-wing supporting friends that one B-1 bomb costs $1 million. How many welfare cheats and others who get "entitlements" does that one bomb’s cost cover?

Congress just voted to spend more than $500 billion of your tax money on military spending for 2014… while our cities are crumbling physically, economically and spiritually. Services are being cut or sold out to private industry (for profits that are unnecessary), library and school budgets lowered… everything we need is becoming in short supply: fire personnel and equipment, local police, ambulance services… need I go on?

1. Are we a civilized nation, or are we an imperialist country?

It seems, if we are to face facts, a war mongering, imperialist country.

We have a fleet of planes the military doesn't want at $150 to almost $200 million, a copy. How many bridges could the money repair/rebuild? How many full time, Living Wage Jobs could that money create, if applied to Main Street? How many public schools could that money fully fund? How many miles of high speed rail, across this country, could that money fund?
The list goes on and on and on. We have plenty of money to blow stuff up and kill innocents in other countries, but we don't have enough to take care of our own in need.

We as a nation have lost our way, that is obvious. But we have too many cheer leaders on both sides of the fence, that refuse to face the facts that our government is not very responsive to the populaces. Our leaders may talk a good game, but the actions needed to correct the wrongs always seem to miss the mark. Even when we seem to win one, now and again, somehow it always has damaging barbs and exceptions in it. But never mind, both sides continue cheer leading for their favorite leader, based mainly on the (D) or the (R) by the name and that is what is important, correct? Thinking not required.
After all, for many politics is only a sports game, where we root for our favorite team, oblivious of the crimes the leaders on both sides are committing against those of us that pay them to lead us. Yea Team!

Good column. War profiteers is the traditional label given to the leeches who profit from war and military spending. Their army of lobbyists work on the puppets in Congress to increase military budgets (and also the secret "black" budgets for CIA, etc), and to vote for war as a way to boost business.

i agree with both comments as to my new column ' Save our Cities...'
we who care need to realize that the electoral process is not going to work AT THIS TIME. too much control of the process by the 2 party con job.
we who understand what is wrong with America and wish to put forth bold solutions, need to get out in public with signs that express our thoughts, and educate our neighbors.
i have been doing this weekly for 9 years now, and i do reach folks... a few at a time.
thousands read my sign ' Save our Cities... Cut Military spending 25%... End All Occupations '
my advice is for ALL we working stiffs to begin this process, and forget about the Democrats saving us.
