Awakening to GOP's Extremism

By Carol Morgan

It was just a little thing. Nine months ago, Pablo Pantoja, the director of Florida Hispanic Outreach for the Republican National Committee, announced he was leaving the GOP and registering as a Democrat. He cited the extreme culture of intolerance (one of which was a Heritage report that claimed Hispanics are at a permanent disadvantage because of their lower IQ!).

Then another little thing…Texas Republican Judge Carlo R. Key left the GOP. He cited the reason as “pragmatism and principle have been overtaken by pettiness and bigotry”.

Then, at the beginning of this week, it was yet another little thing. On Monday, Ana Rivas Logan, a former GOP state representative, arrived at the Miami-Dade Elections Department to file as a Democrat. She was quoted as saying, “The GOP of today is not the party I joined. It’s not the party of my parents. It’s a party that has been radicalized and held hostage by a group of extremists.”

Little things add up quickly and they get attention.

Even those still firmly entrenched in the party are echoing the warnings of the GOP’s drift to extremism. House Speaker John Boehner has claimed there is nothing he can do to prove that he’s conservative enough for the Tea Party fringe of the GOP. Just two days ago, Rand Paul warned that Texas will go blue if Republicans don’t adapt to the gradual shifts in the state.

Party Loyalty oaths for those wishing to switch parties.
We do not need a lot of wingers in progressive clothing.

In our county at least 5 good Dems have been hounded to switch parties so they could keep their jobs. The last one just changed parties. Several of these are jobs which, in my opinion, should not be elected position. There is much more impetus in Texas to be a Repug than a Dem so anyone switching is doing so as a matter of conscience. I have a cousin who is a judge in another county. He is not a conservative but he told me he would never be elected if he ran as a Repug and he is right.

for at least the last 30 years bigotry has been at the heart of the party. It is just becoming more evident now that we have a black president.
