(51 posts)Let me explain it to you all. The idea is that their guns are compensating for their small penises.
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)And it wasn't funny the first thousand times or so it's been used here. I'm not outraged about it and I'm not going to alert on it, but things like this should be pointed out.
Reno Master
(51 posts)About it's being sexist: Since only males have penises, I guess technically that's the case. However, I don't think people take it as predominately sexist. Btw, are you a female gun lover?
Major Nikon
(36,827 posts)Apparently 4 out of 6 did take it that way.
Or perhaps they were all female gun lovers.
Reno Master
(51 posts)The point was that guns are a compensation for feelings of inadequacy (whatever the cause). Is that better?

(36,827 posts)I gave the poster a heads up and they didn't take it. The results speak for themselves. Make of it what you will.

(2,983 posts)I think we all comprehend what it was intended to suggest. It's still sexist. It's still not funny. It still doesn't belong here. I'm a male who doesn't really care for guns one way or another.

(8,879 posts)don't do small penis endowed men/boys any favors. Life isn't so bleak without a large phallus. Really, it isn't.

(54,041 posts)This is a story about mental illness.

(2,983 posts)A story about mental illness, I think, would include a list of symptoms, a history of some form of suffering, trauma. Perhaps I'm oversensitive on this subject, but it bugs the hell out of me when people immediately link monstrous criminal to mental illness. Is it possible, perhaps even likely that the criminal is mentally ill? Perhaps. It is also entirely possible that they are not. It is entirely possible that they are simply monstrous at heart, full of malice, cruelty, anger and hatred.
It seems to me that there is this sort of struggle to explain criminal behavior, or bizarre behavior, as being absolutely the result of mental illness. This simply isn't the case. There isn't any evidence in this story to suggest the criminal in question is anything more than a terribly cruel, terribly shallow person. Perhaps that's a cold take on it, but in my experience, human beings are perfectly capable of being cruel and terrible without the necessity of mental illness.

Instead, its just a quirky news story. Lolz.

(54,041 posts)I'm not sure what's going on inside your head that would make you think anyone on DU would find this funny. But please look over the posts in this thread. Everyone's horrified. Once you finish clucking your tongue at the imaginary voices heathens in your brain, please go get a reality check. I think yours is on the fritz.
By the way, my subject line for this post was sarcasm. I only tell you this in case you decided to miss the glaringly obvious a second time.

think it would likely be, she'd be murdered for a longer than normal clitoris .... or a third nipple.. etc or in the case of this Surrogate. a cleft lip among other things.

(43,049 posts)and who knows wtf they do over there about oddly sized, shaped, colored, or whatever else body parts. If this were Kentucky, maybe I'd give a shit about another illiterate 14 year old who got knocked up and regretted the kid whatever his dong size.
And what's with the knife? That's not how she killed him.

this coming from someone who looks at vacuum pumps and think. does that really work. clearly didn't get the message from Rammsteins Pu**y video. well even censored the line is fairly clear..

(43,049 posts)what does anyone expect after the presentation of the story with a woman looking as Western as can be with that ugly knife?
Indonesia, btw, has 245 million people, 70% of which are of 8 major ethnic groups with perhaps hundreds of smaller ones. While I prefer to doubt that many, if any, of them consider this a proper action, the killing of children is not unheard of. Muti killings in South Africa, pre-Columbian child sacrifice, the Chinese killing baby girls because of the one child law, Spartans killing weaklings, mass killings of children in the Bible... It's not new and it's not unheard of even today.
A horror to most of us, yes, but I'm one of those who would rather understand more of the situation than just put it up as a freak show. Maybe even guided toward some international organization dealing with it if it's a widespread problem.
The story was not put up there for wider understanding of the culture, but just for shock value to get hits for his site. "Flippant" is worse than that?

(14,177 posts)She might have found some other equally crazy reason for killing him if it wasn't for that. Like maybe he had a uni brow, or maybe he read too much, or maybe he put on a few pounds. Really hard to say and it's impossible to say if she would have killed a girl child for any reason.

(2,983 posts)The one that most bothers me (even more than the infantile, bizarre jokes) is the idea that... because someone did this, they must be mentally ill - therefor, it is assumed that we should have sympathy, perhaps treat this person after the fact. (Note that the following is sarcasm) Oh, she had such a rough upbringing, her life was terrible, which led to mental illness, etc. The chemicals in her brain misfired, she had no control over her own actions!
Someone who is very sad for an extended period of time, who wants to kill themselves, who hears voices, who has frequent panic attacks... this person is likely to be mentally ill. Such a person is far more deserving of our sympathy and empathy than monsters like the one described by this video. Make no mistake - she is a monster, any person who commits this kind of terrible act is no longer worthy of being called human.
I haven't the slightest sympathy for the Mother, I do not care if she was mentally ill. She needs to be separated from society either through a prison system or a high security psychiatric facility.

(6,151 posts)Regardless of whether the topic belongs here in any shape or form, reactions tell a lot about those who make them as much as the story principal. Some things are not fodder for jokes. Period.
I agree that it's a cop-out to gloss over personal responsibility with a too-convenient excuse of mental illness. But I think that one reason people automatically slap that on is more than plain ignorance. They can't face the monstrous nature of some people. It's so scary that the only way to deal with it is to declare the perpetrator must be mentally ill; perhaps this will lessen the danger of Joe or Jane Neighbor committing some such horror because they seem perfectly normal. Certainly none of our relatives would ever go on a killing spree, because OUR family doesn't do bad things! We're all sane! Especially ME!
So the excuse making amounts to whistling in the dark. They can't bear to contemplate the seed of evil inside every human heart. It can be kept at bay on starvation rations, but we all have it. Hiding under the covers has never been a good coping strategy so far as I know.
