(5,610 posts)Our Union flew many of us to NOLA immediately after Katrina. It was a war-zone. There was no organizations in place to help the poor and/or elderly. I spent a year there. I met some of the best people (survivors) imaginable. The suffering and deaths were preventable in many cases. A year later, the poor who survived Katrina and bush were displaced. Their homes still destroyed and untouched. The gentrification was in full swing while the 9th ward still looked like a war-zone. Martial law was enforced by contractors for Homeland Security. They were well paid, unkempt bullies that were a step below the "criminal element" they were to control.
It was a hellish place. Yet the survivors who stayed were terrific people (mostly) who had obviously been suffering serfdom long before Katrina.
