(10,103 posts)I am, frankly, at the stage of eating most things raw or very lightly cooked, and avoiding most processed foods. Crackers and breads have waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much salt, let alone chips and soda. It's amazing.
I've also discovered a couple of soda types that have cane sugar; it easier on my system. Apparently, genetically modified corn is responsible for my type 2 diabetes, or mostly. Even fruit juice doesn't destroy my system the way that anything with corn sugar does. I end up adding regular raisins to bran flakes so that I can avoid the sugar coating on raisin bran. Eating out is a minefield, and I tend to stick a jar of real maple syrup in my bag when going out for breakfast, to avoid the corn sugar. There is an English product that is cane syrup, but I can't find it anymore. There is enough sugar in tomatoes without adding more, and I tend to cook that stuff.
It's amazing to me why processed foods are eaten so often. They don't taste right to me anymore, and the fact is that sugar-free or low-salt means that they usually have other chemicals to make up for the lack.

(33,982 posts)I would select for a nice, cold, crisp tomato before touching a greasy piece of crap from burger king right now.
Stuff I used to be unable to say 'no' to just isn't appealing to me anymore. Very useful.
I am pre-diabetic and I have high blood pressure, though I take medication for the blood pressure. But I must have my salt, so I use low-sodium salt. I do not even have sugar in my kitchen only Splenda. I love ice cream but buy only sugar-free ice cream and sugar-free chocolate syrup. And I never fry any food nor do I drink sodas. Water is my preferred beverage. I am a vegetarian and only eat fish.
But I do love Saltine crackers and am guilty of eating them with butter.

(10,103 posts)I find that cane sugar is less damaging to me and my sugar level. The problem is that sugar has to be labelled cane sugar....the other stuff is beets or corn for the most part, and a lot of it is GMO.
Aspartame and MSG are neuroexcitotoxins, and give me migraines.
