I have no idea what I'm talking about but doesn't amperage have to do with how bad shocks can be ?

If he's alive, someone broke the circuit or there was a breaker that broke it for him. It's the current that kills. Volts will make your skin burn and your muscles contract and such like, but to kill, there has to be a lot of current, and simple mains power volts and amps is way more than enough to kill if the circuit is not broken. Perhaps someone kicked the mic out of his hand. If so, that was a good friend who risked also being electrocuted.
