Fast Food Forward Workers Surround Domino’s in Brooklyn Following Wrongful Termination

Published on May 23, 2013

Following a wrongful termination, a group of activists and workers organized by Fast Food Nation surround a Domino's location in Brooklyn, NY to effectively shut it down.

After parking my car this early afternoon I encountered dozens of Fast Food Forward-affiliated protestors preparing to take action against a Domino’s Pizza on Graham Avenue in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Activists explained that an employee named “Gregory” had been wrongfully terminated and that the group planned to shut the Domino’s down in order to get Gregory his job back.

Shortly after this video was taken, police showed up and removed protestors from the store which is quite small as it is a walk-up window without seating.

Maryland Ain’t No Michigan: Gov. Signs Largest Expansion of the Prevailing Wage in State History

In specifying that the prevailing wage is a requirement for all projects done by water utility WSCC, Maryland is bucking the recent trend of states looking to weaken prevailing wages at the behest of big business lobbies. The bill will help ensure that local workers find their way onto projects over out-of-state workers whose employers put in the lowest bids based on their ability to pay their workers so little. Via DCLabor.org:

A bill introduced by Delegate Tom Hucker (D-Montgomery) and recently passed by the General Assembly expanded the prevailing wage requirement to the massive suburban Maryland water utility (WSSC) just as it is embarking on $2-3 billion in work over the next five years under the terms of a consent decree with the EPA.

“For too long, WSSC has spent ratepayers’ money on low-wage contractors from outside our area” said Hucker. “I’m so proud our landmark expansion of the Maryland prevailing wage law will mean hundreds of millions of dollars of new work for local contractors and thousands of new union construction jobs.”

The bill “ensures that folks working on these projects will get paid a fair wage and benefits… we’re happy about that” says Washington Building and Construction Trades’ Mark Coles.
