(43,049 posts)on saluting. Since he was never in the military, some were taken aback by his assuming the privilege of saluting.
But, it turns out that although he was the first President to return a salute, the troops loved him for it.
There apparently is no protocol, and the President can salute or not as he sees fit. I'm thinking a personal word and a handshake might be more appreciated by a Marine.

(3,425 posts)He remembers to salute just as he enters the copter and then comes back out and acknowledges the guy standing there. I thought it was just great. He really is a caring person.

I watched that segment a number of times, and it looks like the pilot was making salute motions like trying to get Obama's attention and remind him. And then as soon as Obama got in the helicopter, it looks like he had a brief conversation with the pilot and came right back out.
The pilot was in Marine uniform, not surprisingly given that it is a Marine helicopter dubbed "Marine One".
Either way, I agree Obama handled it well. But I know this will be grist for those right wing emails -- similar to the ones during the Clinton administration where there was a viral email about how the Marine was giving Clinton a kind-of-disrespectful salute.
