Story of America's Eric Byler caught up with Nancy Brown at 3 am at the Wake County Detention Center. She had been released hours earlier, but the person with whom she was riding home had not yet been released. She recounted her experience of being arrested by Capitol Police as part of the "Moral Mondays" civil disobedience campaign led by Rev. Dr. William Barber of the North Carolina NAACP. Annabel Park and Byler then visited Nancy's home six days later.
New laws would target the parents of college students who register to vote with tax increases (parents would not be able to claim their children as dependents if they register to vote near their campus, rather than at their parents' address), end Sunday voting and same-day registration for early voting, and, reduce the number of early voting days resulting in long lines at polling places in well-populated areas. A "voter ID" law would create a financial and logistical barrier for hundreds of thousands of American citizens who wish to continue voting, but do not own cars, or were born many years ago before hospital births were commonplace.
Meanwhile, tax increases would hit the poor and the middle class, while tax breaks are being afforded to two dozen wealthy families. Assistance from the federal government is being refused, including unemployment benefits and Medicaid expansion that would have helped half a million poor people get health insurance.

(26,624 posts)economic stability. One vote at a time.... Not via citizen's united... Thats why I don't think those student's and their parents should be punished.. I hope this economic reality flies in the face of this voting rights abuse...

(12,265 posts)I always encouraged my students to register and vote! They spen 4 years or more in a community. Why should they be treated any differently tahn someone who lives there 3 years and is tranferred to another area. They pay sales taxes in the community, rent, buy groceries, clothes etc. They are valuable members of the community and should be allowed to vote!

(12,265 posts)I spent a lot of years as an Academic Advisor, my husband teaches. I had a small number of students and was able to become close to them. They trusted me so it was easy to encourage them to vote. I also had signs in my office reminding them of dates to register and vote. I kept my politics out of it but I think most knew I was a Democrat and pretty liberal.
I was also fortunate that GLBT students felt comfortable coming to me for help or an ear when needed. You do not have to teach to have "students" these were my kids! I do miss them so very much....

(12,265 posts)Some of my kids ended up overseas, Dubai was one good place. They could make enough in 4 years to pay off a lot of their student loans. Hoping that after that things would get better here. I pray they will. These kids are drowning in debt.

(60,096 posts)much of anything. A large part of the list of NC based companies are connected to NASCAR/motor sports. Lowe's and Smithfield are based there, but Smithfield might become Chinese soon.
At least they will be owned by company based in a country with a better human rights record than North Carolina. /sacrcasm.
