(45,026 posts)it's just hilarious to see someone in a government actually saying something like that. He couldn't get elected dog catcher here.

(27,137 posts)What are the qualifications for office? Do you have to have a college degree? Or just the right pedigree? I do have a Master's but its in Public Admin and not animal husbandry or veterinarian. Also, I've slowed down considerable in the past few years, so I don't know how many dogs I could actually catch, but I was always good at tricking my dog when it was time for a bath.
- And I've also seen a UFO before. Do you think that would help???

(8,209 posts)In early September 2005, Hellyer made headlines by publicly announcing that he believed in the existence of UFOs. On 25 September 2005, he was an invited speaker at an exopolitics conference in Toronto, where he told the audience that he had seen a UFO one night with his late wife and some friends. He said that, although he had discounted the experience at the time, he had kept an open mind to it. He said that he started taking the issue much more seriously after watching ABC's Peter Jennings' UFO special
in February 2005.[citation needed]
Watching Jennings' UFO special prompted Hellyer to read U.S. Army Colonel Philip J. Corso's book The Day After Roswell, about the Roswell UFO Incident, which had been sitting on his shelf for some time. Hellyer told the Toronto audience that he later spoke to a retired U.S. Air Force general, who confirmed the accuracy of the information in the book. In November 2005, he accused U.S. President George W. Bush of plotting an "Intergalactic War". The former defence minister told an audience at the University of Toronto:

(46,312 posts)Phil Corso is like those guys on the Hysteria channel, who claim us humans couldn't tie our own shoelaces until "the aliens" (which are never shown any CREDIBLE evidence of,) showed us how.
And Roswell was NOT a crashed flying saucer.
It was a CIA spy balloon.

(649 posts)I have seen no proof of any life originating from off this planet, but there is much I have not directly experienced. ET involvement would explain a lot.

(825 posts)I don't quite know what to think. But I do believe there are discoveries yet made that will astonish us. How arrogant to believe we have "it" all figured out.
Surely the knowledge of the future will make our current beliefs seem quaint (flat earth anyone?).
I for one want to keep an open mind.
yes, I'm amazed at the lack of having an open mind on this message board.......

(5,279 posts)First, it is an accepted scientific probability that Advance Alien Civilizations exist. The most accepted formula to calculate how many might be out there is the Drake formula N = R* fp ne fl fi fc L .
R* = the average number of star formation per year in our galaxy
fp = the fraction of those stars that have planets
ne = the average number of planets that can potentially support life per star that has planets
fl = the fraction of planets that could support life that actually develop life at some point
fi = the fraction of planets with life that actually go on to develop intelligent life (civilizations)
fc = the fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space
L = the length of time for which such civilizations release detectable signals into space
Where Drake first used his formula on the Milky Way, his calculated between 1000-100000 advanced civilizations.
Second, We here constantly go on about the 1%ers, the military industrial complex, the out of control security apparatuses, the Koch Brother's ALEC, and the banksters. Seems to me like the Minister and us agree on a lot of things, just not the names.
Personally, I like to keep an open mind. Yeah I have to be on the lookout for people who would use it for an ashtray, but still I like to keep it open.

(13,485 posts)things aren't always what they seem... or what we are meant to think they are. The universe I'm sure has more surprises to come than we can even imagine.
But me thinks a datum is best.

Yes, there are things going on beyond our imagination, and being jaded or cynical does not make them go away. The truth shall be revealed one day, probably very soon...

(247 posts)learn our planet with it's belief in religions like Mormonism, brutal wars,
careless concern for the environment, were the only life force in the Universe.
Sometimes I believe the only thing to save us from ourselves would be for
a more humane and evolved life force to come to our rescue in the event
we start using nuclear weapons or something just as fatal.
The ex-Defense Minister is extremely brave to make these statements.
Some of the comments on this thread are a perfect example how the
average person is unprepared to mentally consider the possibility.
