4. The FP reporter....

...is entitled to his opinion. Not everyone agrees with him. Including myself. On the other hand, I've watched the video. And I know that it covers the fact that Kony's not presently in Uganda. The video is told in story form covering a nine year period after the author met one of the kidnapped children who had successfully gotten away from Kony. It's not presented as a news story. Kony has been doing this shit and getting away with it for 26 years. And no one's given a damn enough to put a stop to him. I think that's worth noting. By now.

Your Mr Keating states: ''As I wrote for FP in 2010, the small remaining LRA forces are still wreaking havoc and very hard to catch, but Northern Uganda has had tremendous recovery in the 6 years of peace since the LRA left.''

So does this mean Kony should be ignored? Allowed to get away with his crimes? Allowed to continue on in his now reduced murdering role? This KONY2012 effort is about making Joseph Kony famous. So famous in fact that he'll be fleshed-out into the open. And then arrested. If any critic has a problem with that then I'd say they're the one with the problem.

5. I don't object in any way to the overall goal of making him famous in order to flush

him out.

The author's objections are about the framing and he has legitimate concerns that the sabre rattling is misleading and may lead to aggressive action in an area with only a modicum of stability.

It's a sticky corner to be in. On the one hand, anything that increases the public's awareness of and willingness to participate in addressing the atrocities in areas of the world like East Africa is a-ok with me.

OTOH, I think it's important to be aware of possible unintended consequences. I think the author struggles with this as well.

7. will this really make a difference? .. let's wait and see

It's amazing to see that 50m views on facebook about a subject that most people know nothing about has opened up debate about the power of social media networking as a form of distribution of ideas... i'm sure a lot of people watching will be thinking, how do i go about distributing my ideas in the same way?

whether they be corporates, political organisations or independent creatives...the subject matter is emotive and the film is interesting.. it's not a documentary though and is actually more of a charity advert.. i agree that what kony has got away with for years is despicable but it doesn't address what's going on in Uganda... it doesn't present an argument, just an issue.. and i congratulate the films makers for making it.. i'm not sure how it will affect the actual situation or how it might 'change things on the ground'.

anyone who has seen the film 'Blood Diamonds' will be familiar with the background story of enforced child abduction and subsequent forced military action...which is atrocious, but did this international feature film watched by millions stop the killing anywhere ?

i for one will be watching Kony 2012 with interest.. if it makes a difference in the real world and people start to learn about the subject for themselves, understand the problem then lobby for action, then social media networking will be proved to be an important new tool for the discussion of ideas and how to get things done... if nothing else it proves the rules of media have indeed changed, and that is probably a good thing for everyone !

10. Both of my younger daughters (almost 17, and 18) have already seen this on their own.

They've been questioning me on the issue and I don't really know what to say. Part of me says "knock the fucker out" and another part says "it isn't our business". I'm torn and don't know how to answer them. Most of our fuck-ups have been going into places where we don't belong (Korea, Viet Nam, Iraq), and yet we were late on the scene in WW-II. It just isn't an easy thing to explain. I know the history, I know the issues, but I just can't figure out how to adequately explain the implications of military involvement to them. And yes, the video made me cry.
