The Young Turks ·Published on Oct 24, 2013
"A BBC interview with comedian/actor Russell Brand is getting attention today because, it's said, he speaks for many younger adults who are fed up with politics and politicians.
Brand, who seems almost proud to say he's never voted, makes the case that "the lies, treachery and deceit of the political class that has been going on for generations" make casting a ballot pointless."* The Young Turks hosts Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian break it down.
''I believe that it is better to tell the truth than a lie. I believe it is better to be free than to be a slave. And I believe it is better to know than to be ignorant.'' ~H. L. Mencken

(1,248 posts)They accuse Paxman of not doing his homework when it's clear that they have absolutely no idea who he is. For anyone who doesn't kow, he is the finest and most aggressive British political interviewer since Robin Day and the very reason that Tony Blair was far more likely to be giving interviews to Des O'Conor than on Newsnight. Then they compound this by mocking his accent and manners. It all comes across as an exercise in creative ignorance combined with some very public kissing of Brand's arse.
Here is Paxman interviewing the then Home Secretary Michael Howard about the decision to sack the former head of the Prison Service. This is an object lesson in how to stop a politician wriggling off the hook.
And here he is making Tony Blair squirm and expose himself with vacuous non-answers.
And finally battling to get something out of a less than sober Pete Townshend.

(716 posts)... which kind of proves their point: his best line was "You're very passionate!" because he didn't expect the kind of interview he was getting.
You're right, their attempt at humor was "off"- even embarrassing; but a little cheerful, slightly mocking humor is a regular on that show, and most people watch it for the clips and facts and interviews, that humor is like background mood music, in a way.
There's a fascination in seeing such a distasteful actor come up with some really good points.
