Nature-Deficit Disorder

Go outside and play!

How many times as children did we hear that from our parents if we so much as raised our voices or threw a ball in the house? Now that kids sit quietly in front of the TV, computer or video game, have parents actually stopped insisting they get out and exercise? The electronic age -- combined with safety concerns -- triggered what has been termed nature-deficit disorder, a disturbing lack of environmental interaction that may be ruining the health of today's children.

The time is getting short, enough of the current nature deficit disorder. I do disagree that it should only be a local response...national and state wide leadership is needed by our "leaders".

Where? I haven't seen any. Have you? What do they look like? What do they do? Can you tell me how to recognize one if I see it? Should I be afraid of it? Are they dangerous?

understated, messages here. Thanks for posting!

"Interaction with nature not only prevents ills, it enhances creativity, spirituality, and problem solving skills"

"The prescription for (nature-deficit disorder) is really pretty cheap: GET OUTDOORS!"

(Let's promote) "No child left indoors"

And, I'm guessing that Climate Change Denial is also a lot easier to believe in if you have very little contact with the natural world around you.

Most parents these days would probably be horrified by the adventures kids in Mark Twain's day took for granted!

at least once a day. She said we are separated from the earth, ground, land, or dirt by rubber shoes and boots, house floors and concrete. She believed that by touching the earth with nothing between your skin and the bare ground, you could reconnect with your humanity.

I farm and there are days I am so filled with joy and the beauty around me that I feel I might explode.
