a sign that somebody doesn't understand the whole concept of insurance to say, "I don't need women's health care, so I shouldn't have to pay for it."

He is a leading progressive voice in our country, and I believe we as a nation will be worse off when he retires (after this term), and I am sad to see him go.

I was thinking about this and the food stamp cuts this morning. You know, I really don't think that our country is one country at all any more. I think that we are just falling apart. When people don't want to pay slightly higher taxes in order to make sure that everyone has enough to eat, we are just a fragmented, divided country. There isn't much hope, I realized this morning.

we need so many more elected officials like Tom Harkin. He truly sets the bar. But we also need ordinary citizens who share his values and who work to get those officials elected.

JD, I really hope we're not falling apart as a country. I see more of a wave washing up on the shore that has brought hate-radio, hate-TV, hate-websites, etc. But people of good faith must get up off the sand, stand strong and united, and I think the garbage will eventually wash back out to sea. We've been through depressingly awful times in our history and are living through one of the worst right now. Our democracy must not become a demockracy.

Thank you, Senator Harkins for your clear minded thinking, and for your long service to us.
